"3 months notice"

Stupid question alert! If a contract says "3 months notice" would that mean 3 calendar months or 12 weeks? So for example if you hand your notice in on Friday 1st July does that mean you leave on Friday 23rd September (12 weeks bang on) or does it mean you leave on Saturday 1st October (or the day before on the Friday if not working weekends) which is longer than 12 weeks... Sorry but I've never had to think about this before!

No expert, but my rule of thumb would be that if you're paid monthly then it's calendar months, if weekly then 12 weeks?

3 calendar months. However you may be able to negotiate it down - DH has certainly done that in the past.

Better to ask in the legal section, but it would be the ordinary meaning of the words in the context.
So on its own In my mind if it's the 22nd today it would expire on the 22nd September.
However if you're talking about tenancy then months start from the day you pay your rent, so if you pay your rent on the 10th then it will expire 10th October.
On the other hand if you're talking about a contract for moon photography it might be based on the lunar cycle!
If it's something you get delivered once a month then you might get 3 more deliveries.
Ultimately it's for the court to decide if negotiation fails.
