Dh has just suggested we have a few nights away in the summer holidays, somewhere cheap.

Oh how I laughed...🤣

Cheap... Summer holidays. The year after a pandemic where the majority of people are staying in the UK, it would seem. I'm aware we have well and truly missed the boat this year.

Just showed him a lovely caravan holiday in Wales. The most basic accommodation, 7 nights is over £1000.

Any suggestions of where I could look before I shatter his dreams of a summer holiday?

🤣

Just two of you? You could get a cottage in Scotland or Cumbria for £500 for a week.

OompaLoompaa · 21/06/2022 19:53

Haven have 4 night breaks for under £500.

Florencenotflo · 21/06/2022 19:54

@titchy no, us 2 and 2 kids. On specific dates too, not much room for flexibility. He has 6 days off at the end of July. 😳

Why not book a Premier Inn in a city you’d like to visit? Much cheaper than proper holiday accommodation and there’s loads of stuff to do in cities.

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 21/06/2022 19:54

Do you live somewhere that others would like to visit? If so a house swap may work

Florencenotflo · 21/06/2022 19:55

@OompaLoompaa I have looked at Haven. I didn't see any under £500 but because we only have a 6 day window, it's likely to be that bumping up the price. 1st week of the holidays.

I will look again though.

@ScarlettDarling we have done that before before having kids. We have a 6 and 3 year old, they aren't as interested in city breaks, breaks with them tend to be around a beach, park etc. They love being outdoors, but not so much in museums and cafes.

I have no idea why this company is so much cheaper than anyone else but Lakeland retreats does gorgeous cottages in the most beautiful parts of the Lake District for well under 1k a week in high season. Loads of choices.
Take a look

titchy · 21/06/2022 19:58

Loads of cottages around the £500 mark that week that sleep 4!

motogirl · 21/06/2022 19:59

Barry In wales? Saw some camping pods in Lyme Regis, try the east coast perhaps? Or Normandy if you can get a cheap enough ferry

Florencenotflo · 21/06/2022 19:59

@titchy that looks lovely! I will show DH, it is my idea of heaven being in the lakes. We are in Kent though, probably as far south as you can get, it's quite a way up to the lakes.

Sorry, I didn't intend on just poo pooing every idea people proposed. I am having a look, it just tickled me the way DH dropped into conversation this afternoon, he honesty has no concept of the world around him sometimes!

Or Weston super mare

funkysheep · 21/06/2022 20:00

There are Premiere Inns in beach towns - I've stayed at the one in Lowestoft. Not self catering does make food a bit more expensive, but you could just go for 2-3 nights if that's what you can afford.

Florencenotflo · 21/06/2022 20:01

@motogirl I love Barry Island! We go there quite a bit when we visit family nearby. Unfortunately elderly relative would not appreciate being descended on by us lot for longer than a quick visit 😂 but I will see what's about!

When ours were that age they really enjoyed camping- I would recommend Dorset near Studland beach. Corfe castle area.

DogDaysNeverEnd · 21/06/2022 20:04

Check out Distillery Cottage in Elsecar and DM me if it's available for your dates and you're interested (price negotiable)! It says it's sleeps 3 but could accommodate 2 littles at a push.

It's not a traditional holiday area (it is a UNESCO world heritage area) but for that reason it's pretty quiet when the beaches are heaving. Easy access to the Peak District and a train into Sheffield/Leeds.

BakeOffRewatch · 21/06/2022 20:05

Following as same situation!

BakeOffRewatch · 21/06/2022 20:05

I’ve been looking on thomascook @Florencenotflo you can set budget.

My friends cottage is beautiful. It's in the bay in Filey and fits your budget

Blueshimmer · 21/06/2022 20:14

I’d go slightly left field and think about London - lots that little kids would enjoy like Kensington museums (eg Wonderlab in science museum) or transport museum, aquarium, Eye, zoo, tower, Cutty Sark, bridges, boat up the river, loads of nice parks, even just going on the underground or an open top bus. Might be busy but bluntly everywhere will be busy that week. Not exactly cheap but has so many hotels that it’s probably still better availability than a seaside caravan park. You can get a Premier Inn in Greenwich family room for 5 nights end of July for approx £300 (although I’d probably only do 2 or 3 nights with little ones, it’s tiring). Get a clipper boat up the Thames to get into centre.

Only issue might be rail strikes.

Or just holiday at home - go to local attractions or some nice day trips, eat easy food, ignore the housework, “camp” in the living room or put a tent in the garden…

BarbaraofSeville · 21/06/2022 20:15

It was his idea. Where does he suggest?

The Premier Inn suggestion might work.
There was a couple of threads last year from OPs who wanted to go somewhere unpopular so it was cheap. I think one was the Stoke area and the other Bradford. Both had a great time IIRC.

Or you could put your dates into a last minute package holiday search and you might find something if you're not fussy about where and what standard but I'd definitely bat the idea back to him to put the mental effort into.

balalake · 21/06/2022 20:16

Hope you find somewhere, no suggestions to add, but I did laugh at your DH and his unawareness of how much holidays cost.
