What sandwich filling for 4year old party

For my dc's joint party with his friend we are doing individual lunch nags for each child. What would you put in the sandwich? We have 1 who doesn't eat pork or beef and one who is intolerant to dairy and soya. So we can do those separately. There will be other food in each bag so the children won't starve but I wanted to pick something I could do for most of them rather than send another message out asking for choices. What would you choose?

I've done several parties & Tuna Mayo is always the most popular. One child took 5 sandwiches home with them (no, they aren't malnourished or anything).
& can we please stop with the narrative that every child likes cheese! They don't! Mine don't. I don't. I do equal amounts of cheese sandwiches, ham sandwiches & tuna Mayo sandwiches at parties & there are always cheese ones left. Not to mention all the people who can't eat it. Please don't just give every child a cheese sandwich.

Ugh. I went on a school trip once as a kid that was… medieval-themed, for some reason? And the lunch was a bread roll, a lump of cheese, and an apple that had been all wrapped up together all morning. Couldn't eat any of it because it'd all picked up the smell/taste of the cheese 🤢

It's possible I was able to go and wash the apple and eat it, I don't remember. I just remember the disappointment of being a kid on a school trip unwrapping a lunch that turned my stomach and realising I wouldn't be eating anything. To some people, cheese smells decomposed, like it's not even food, just a combination of the worst bodily smells. Eating something else that's been pressed up against a warming, sweating lump of cheese all morning is a big ask 😂

I would play it safe so no cross contamination etc - mini breadsticks, cucumber and carrot sticks, cherry tomato and whatever else you were going to add.

Then some crisps.mini jaffas or choc animal biscuits, party rings, kit Kat or something sweet and chocolatey like that.
A fruit kebab.
Fruit juicec carton or bottle.
Cake
Yoghurt or tube yoghurt
Two miniature hero sized chocs.

Ham,cheese, Nutella or jam.

CavernousScream · 21/06/2022 07:10

My kids don’t like cheese either and the youngest isn’t that keen on ham. When we’ve had other kids round for lunch and asked what they want in their sandwiches, I’ve never had a child say cheese or ham ! I’m surprised it’s what so many people would go for.

Coffeesnob11 · 21/06/2022 09:33

Doing a mix selection is a great idea. We are doing a small fruit pot as both birthday kids love it, plus vegetable and hummus, small pack of biscuits, crisps and a yoggie.

plain chicken slices (check pack as many contain dairy)
and plain cheese

sweets I would serve separately.

possibly cheese cubes/babybel/cheese strings.

One of mine would have preferred marmite to any other filling at that age, the other ham. Cheese would be second choice for either. They never did like jam.

It doesn’t matter, they will only eat the sweet stuff and crisps

parents quite like hoovering up marmite sandwiches though

Yes to the marmite sandwiches!

CakeByTheOceanCocktail · 21/06/2022 10:06

We've done it in the past where we've asked them to choose between ham, cheese and jam, then made them to order. Even then we had one who could only eat marmite sandwiches, but that was also fine

SprinkledGlitter · 21/06/2022 13:58

I was going to do individual snack boxes, and give each children a jam sandwich and a cheese spread sandwich. I am not sure whether I should now.

LetItGoToRuin · 21/06/2022 15:34

Many children have quite firm preferences, so I don't think a mixed pack for each child is ideal as many would only eat one or two small triangles, and there would be a lot of wasted food.

One year when we were doing individual lunch boxes, I asked the parent/child what filling they would like, from a selection (we offered ham, cheese, jam, tuna) and labelled each box so the child got the filling of their choice.

Another option is to have the children fill their own boxes, which might be fun.

Ham, jam, grated cheese. All on white bread. Remember that loads of kids don't like butter either.
