Dog pee & artificial grass

Just moved into a house with artificial grass in garden. Previous owner had a dog so I want to disinfect the grass as it doesn’t smell great and I have kids who want to roll around on it 😂

Before I spend a small fortune on products that don’t work, does anyone have any tried and tested recommendations please?

It is hysteria when people are literally dictating what the OP should do and lecturing her about the environment.

She didn't ask for views on artificial grass vs real grass, she asked for a solution for already existing artificial grass that smells bad.

Fine if the solution for people who have had the same problem has been to remove it, I probably would remove it too, but the tone in which some people reply in is just plain patronising.

Tempted to suggest OP sprinkles compost on it and scatters some mixed wildflower seeds ahead of the next forecast rain, in the hope rhat something the mix could withstand the brutal conditions and grow. But I realise that would make ultimate removal far more of a headache , and would probably look awful. Might deal with the smell though!

@RedTravellingSocks she never asked how to remove it but how to clean it
Removal and replacing is expensive and may not be in the budget yet, cleaning may only cost a small amount and buy them some time
I find it strange how so many have smelling astro , we have some and a dog and it doesn't smell as it has proper drainage and is hosed down etc,

Our friends say the same but there's definitely an odour when it heats up in the sun. So probably 95% of the year it's fine, but the 5% of the year when you night want to sit in your garden there's a definite odour, not overpowering but noticeable.

You can get enzyme based cleaners for pet urine which break down the remaining salts. No pets, but it's worked really well on toddler pee on the various surfaces I;ve used it on.

The brand I've used is Simple Solution, they do a variety of cleaners for different surfaces, including a decking and patio cleaner.

Yup, I was going to recommend Simple Solution too. I use the one for cat deposits (last cat was old and had accidents).

The enzymes are key here as you want something that actually breaks down the urine rather than masks it temporarily.

@Mariposa80 def no odour as i can assure you my neighbour would be knocking

Mariposa80 · 21/06/2022 12:35

Unless your neighbour was in your garden, they wouldn't smell it. Like I say, it's not overpowering, just a bit of a whiff.
