The price of butter!!!!!

With the price of my favourite spreadable butter now having hit £5 per SMALL tub in my usual supermarket, I’m going to have to look for an alternative brand / shop brand. Any recommendations for butter that tastes nice that you don’t need to take a loan out for?

I will never understand why so many people prefer to support Danish dairy farmers (Lurpak) rather than our own. It’s really not as if the butter is any nicer.

I suspect it’s only because they spend so much on advertising the stuff.

I went in to Sainsburys a couple of weeks ago and a 700g tub of Country Life was £6.25! I ended up getting a 500g tub in Tesco for £2.50 later that day.

I buy real butter (in a block) which I keep in a butter dish. It's, on average, £140 a packet. It tastes far better than Flora etc., as well.

Crikey I hope it’s studded with diamonds instead of salt flakes 😱

I get this, it's gorgeous, only spreadable if not in the fridge so i cut blocks off and put in a butter dish in the cupboard

Definitely ditch the spreadable, it’s not good for you at all.

Even the M&S French salted butter is only £3*

Crazy that we say it's ' only ' £3 ' !

Gingerkittykat · 20/06/2022 19:01

Block butter might be cheaper per 100g but I find it much harder to portion control using it. A block of butter lasts a week or so in my house but spreadable lasts for ages.

I have half a pack of Lurpack spreadable left and am heavily rationing it. I baked a part baked baguette today and spread Philadelphia on it and it just wasn't the same as having lovely butter melting into the warm bread.

KhaleesiOfChaos · 20/06/2022 19:23

Salted butter will keep longer than unsalted...and it tastes better IMO.

I keep mine in an old Lurpak tub out on the side for over a week and it's fine. Definitely the cheapest way to do it if you want something that tastes nice.

thegcatsmother · 20/06/2022 19:27

Waitrose own brand spread able is what I switched to when I could no longer justify the cost of lurpak.

Agree this is lovely.

This is the reason I've switched to spreadable for 85p and everyone's complaining about it, but honestly my shopping bill I'm really having to be careful to try keep it as low as I can now. It's basically the money I have for the week that pays for the food. I used to get my shopping for around 50/60 now it's more like £70/80 so depressing.

I often use salad cream or mayo. For sandwiches cold and ketchup brown sauce for hot fillings. Mayo with mustard is nice

Ha ha. I am officially on 'butter watch' as my yardstick for the cost of living crisis. Even Iceland's is £1.90! Aldi and Sainsbury's own coming in best at the moment at £1.75.

I get texts from my dad with either the price of butter or the price of fuel
Stunned when I searched the texts the other day and saw
2020 fuel 99p
2021 1.56
2022 1.88

BringMeTea · 21/06/2022 22:32

MsOllie maybe you can pass on any butter related intel your dad sends through... ta Grin

RewildingAmbridge · 21/06/2022 22:40

Tesco sells the 750g pack of lurpak for £5.30 still outrageous but not as bad as £5 for 500g

I think he said Lidl was the cheapest last time but he was mid rant about the price of lurpak
Morrisons had the cheapest diesel Grin

(He's newly retired and loves a job so if I tell him to find the cheapest butter he will happily do it)

BarbaraofSeville · 22/06/2022 05:09

@MsOllie tell him to look at trolley.co.uk

He can research and compare the price of butter and anything else from the comfort of his own home.

But the price of fuel was artificially low in 2020 due to falling demand in the first lockdown.

Yes the price is very high now but it was up to nearly 1.50 a litre a few years ago.

But I don't know why people are so obsessed with Lurpak. If you think it's too expensive just buy something else. There were at least 2 different types of block butter in Morrisons yesterday for £1.75 for 250 g. Most supermarkets will have similar.

This is something that's surprised me about the recent price rises. So many people complain about the price of a certain item and it doesn't seem to have occurred to them to that they can cut the cost (significantly if you apply the same thinking to several items) by quickly scanning the shelf to look for something similar that's better value.

Snugglepumpkin · 22/06/2022 10:42

You can't always get the same thing & cut the cost though.

I like slightly salted butter, which every supermarket used to do, but now most of them seem to have stopped doing a cheaper priced version.

Often, if they have it at all, it's President or nothing.

Salted might be similar but it's too salty for us so not an option.

madmumofteens · 22/06/2022 16:32

Saw this on Facebook £7.50 😱
