Use of the phrase 'I'm treating' and its variations

This is a lighthearted one so if you say this, please don't be offended, but I really hate the use of the words 'I'm treating' in any form...

Eg. 'I'm treating her to a takeaway'
Or ''My boyfriends treating me to a night out at the cinema' etc

I'm not quite sure why it irritates me so much and so irrationally. I think the more banal the 'treat' the more it makes my teeth itch! Does anyone else notice this or I am alone? 😆

I love it when someone says “my treat.”
I immediately put my purse away!

”Treat” or “treating” is just a way of saying the other person will pay.
It doesn’t bestow anything more than that does it?

Maybe for you, as discussed on another thread this weekend, (also lighthearted) it gives you the “ick”? That’s hard to get past!

Monsterathai · 20/06/2022 09:16

I think that's definitely true- it absolutely does give me the ick!! It's not the sentiment at all (who doesn't like free stuff 😆 ) it's the literal phrase 'I'm treating'... it sounds so smug / self-aggrandising.

Yeah, I agree OP, I never say it and I cringe a bit when others do.

I just say "I'll get this" usually.

This reminds me of my irrational hatred for people saying they were "spoilt" E.g. on their birthday. If it's in a Facebook post with photos of the gifts they received then even worse! Not sure why but it makes me physically cringe!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/06/2022 10:09

Just a less bald way of saying, ‘I’m paying,’ isn’t it?

OTOH ‘makes my teeth itch’ is one that irritates me. I’ve never heard anyone say it in RL. Isn’t ‘sets my teeth on edge’ (e.g. at nails on a blackboard etc.) the usual RL one?

MikeSingsTheBlues · 20/06/2022 10:09

I find the phrase "it makes my teeth itch" sooo much worse...

user375242 · 20/06/2022 10:25

Oh I hate it too. I think my dislike stems from misuse of it, such as when people say they have treated their infant/small child who couldn't care less to new clothes or any other purchase that was really for the person who claims to be treating someone else. But it just generally makes me cringe. Another innocuous word that does this to me is 'natter'. No idea why.

‘Pricey’ - ew. Just say expensive, there’s no need for the coyness.
