Can any Londoners help me work out what tickets I would need for this train/tube journey?

DH and I are planning a day out with a couple of stops. We want to get the train to Wimbledon, get off there for a bit, then get the District Line to Victoria, then later get the Victoria line to Vauxhall to pick up the mainline train home. Should I get a return ticket to Vauxhall and just get off the inbound train at Wimbledon then use contactless for the tube? Or is there a better way to do it?

Depends where you are starting the first train journey, that ends in Wimbledon. Is it from inside or outside the London zones system?

If inside, just use contactless for everything.

If you're coming from outside the London zones, Vauxhall is in zone 1/2, Wimbledon in zone 3. Get a return ticket from <home location> to boundary zone 1 rather than to/from a named station, and you should be able to get off at Wimbledon, use contactless for the intermediate bits, and then get on at Vauxhall with the return part of your ticket.

You should be able to tap in and out throughout.

Are you starting in london? Just tap your bank card on and out of every journey. They'll cap the cost Sonora no more than a travel card.

Sonora?? So it's no more than a travel card.

Sorry I should have said we are starting outside the travelcard zones, getting a mainline train to Wimbledon. Can't tap in/out at the hone station. Sounds like getting a ticket to boundary zone 1 is the best bet. Thanks all!

If you start within the Oyster Zones you just tap in and out with contactless and at the end of the day the relevant price cap is charged.
If you are starting outside London by train get a paper One Day Travel Card which covers the journey to London, transport all over London (tube, bus, tram, trains etc) and then your journey from London home.

daisypond · 19/06/2022 21:31

Yes, where are you starting from and returning to? Within London travel zones, contactless for everything. Or do you have a railcard? That should make the train sections cheaper.

Can you buy your return train ticket with added on? We're outside the zones but have the option of a standard return or a travel card which includes zone 1-6

BarbaraofSeville · 19/06/2022 21:34

Just use a different contactless card or phone pay each and tap in and out as necessary.

It will cap at the travel card price so no need to worry about return tickets or whether a travel card or individual tickets are best, the system sorts it for you.

I recently did a similar journey and it cost me £7.50 and it was all very easy apart from the rude bus driver who shouted at me because I didn't instinctively know how the system worked the first ever time I used a London bus.

*with a travel card added on

RenegadeKeeblerElf · 19/06/2022 21:42

I can get a travelcard added on to the rail ticket but it usually works out more expensive than just using contactless for each tube journey. And the mainline train is tricky as it isn't a straightforward return - we will be getting off at Wimbledon on the way in and then starting at Vauxhall on the way home. I might ask at the ticket office and see what they suggest. What I want to avoid is having to get two singles for the train as that will definitely be more expensive.

Is Vauxhall not within the travelcard zones? We live a long way out, beyond zone 6, but can still tap on/off or buy an all zones travel card.

Svalberg · 19/06/2022 22:43

I believe that if you get a return "+" ticket to Wimbledon, you'll be able to travel from home to Wimbledon, use a contactless to get around, then if your home journey starts at say Victoria or Vauxhall, use your return ticket from that point and not have to go back to Wimbledon.

ArtVandalay · 19/06/2022 22:46

Just tap in and out. By far the cheapest way to travel imo.

Vauxhall is, but our destination station isn't.

For within the oyster card area, yes, but we live outside that. We will need to buy a ticket for the mainline part of the journey and I'm trying to figure out the best way given that we will be travelling to/from different stations.

Just tap and pay with your bank card it will be cheaper overall and if you do any additional journeys still be capped.

marblemad · 20/06/2022 00:49

But also get normal train ticket to and from Wimbledon additionally, it should be something like a thameslink
