If you go to A&E with suspected concusion, do they "do" anything?

Mum's had a fall. Fell backwards and banged the back of her head on the doorframe.

Lots of blood, but I don't think it's deep and it stopped within a few minutes.

She was definitely not herself though. She didn't lose consciousness, but she was woozy, belching and yawning loudly, otherwise quiet, for about 20 mins. Very much not how she would normally behave.

After that she seems back to her normal self. This happened 2 hours ago and she seems fine now.

Both mum and dad are determined not to go to A&E. They know what to look out for and Dad will monitor her, but she's fine.

If she did go and they confirmed concussion, would they do anything different?

What they will do is diagnose whether it is a concussion or something more serious that needs treatment. Head injuries need to be taken seriously and checked out by a professional.

TroysMammy · 19/06/2022 21:03

How or why did she call in the first place? That may need to be investigated if it just happened.

TroysMammy · 19/06/2022 21:04

Autocorrect - should be fall not call.

Sigh, because they have a ridiculous highly polished wooden floor. People are always slipping on it. She claims that the hours she spends on her hands and knees are just dusting it and no polish ever goes near it...

I also work in an ED. We only order a CT scan for patients who give a history of loss of consciousness, or who have sustained a high risk injury eg fall from height, or anyone on anticoagulants or has new neurological symptoms or signs, or has clinical signs of a skull or facial fracture .

If she's on blood pressure meds - are you sure her blood pressure is OK etc.

She should be seen as blood pressure meds indicate there may be an elevated risk of TIA.

@SecretDoor really? We CT everyone who has had witness LOC, vomiting or change in behaviour/ personality.

SisterAgatha · 19/06/2022 21:48

I had a concussion as a child after a head injury. Was taken to hospital and had some kind of scan as I remember them showing me my adult teeth inside my skull. I was vomiting etc, I remember that.

Years later I was found to have temporal lobe epilepsy originating in the area I was hit. Possibly coincidence but I don’t know.

Please take her. My DM died after falling and hitting her head. The emergency response team didn’t think she needed to go the emergency room but she died that night. 😔

Yes I agree that those would be neurological signs/symptoms and would get a CT scan
I was not making any judgement call on the OPs’s mother. I was clarifying your post as had I read it and thought you were implying that everyone got a CT head scan with a head injury. Apologies

So I eventually got them to call 111 and sat with her while she had the call. They weren't in the least bit concerned "manage at home" ,but a clinician will call. That was 7 hours ago .

Dad's just called me to say I'm bullying her and destroying her confidence 😥
