Betting accounts set up with my email address

Someone has set up accounts with multiple betting websites (like William Hill etc), using my email address, old postcode, date of birth and, in one case, my mother’s maiden name as the security question. I feel really worried about how this person has all this information and why they would set up betting accounts with that information. I’ve contacted each of the betting companies and they are looking into it but does anyone know why someone would do this and what else I should be doing/thinking about? How has someone linked all that information?

First thought - are you married/in a relationship? Could it be your husband/partner has a gambling problem?

To be honest previous postcode/DOB/mothers maiden name is easy to obtain for someone who knows you.

You can report that as identity theft to Action Fraud and the police. If they get involved, they might be able to get the bookies to hand over the IP address and if you are really lucky they might be able to match that up with the fraudster.

There's some info on what to do next here;

...and I would also check your credit file with all 3 credit reference agencies, just in case this person has also set up loans/credit cards to pay for all this gambling.

Also make sure you change the password on your email straight away and from a clean gadget.

I changed my email password today from an iPad that is about 4 months old. Is that likely to be clean enough?

Good idea. I’ll do that, thank you

As long as no one else has had access to your Ipad and its not linked to anyone else's, you should be OK. If you aren't sure you can take it to an Apple store and they'll check it for you.

cakeorwine · 19/06/2022 18:14

So are you getting email from the betting sites?
Surely you can just login and change the password for the site.

Or put a massive bet on something that's bound to lose - if their card is linked to the site.

(After you have changed your own email and put on multi factor authentication)

I just contacted all of the betting places and asked them to close the accounts. Today I’m going to contact the police and credit ref agencies as suggested above. I just can’t work out why someone would bother to set up fake accounts for a betting place. It’s not as if they have access to my actual money so I don’t understand the point

I mean, yesterday I contacted the betting places. Very tedious it was too!

It’s only linked to my iPhone. Might that be a problem do you think?

Maybe the gambler has been banned on those sites and is using other people's identities.

Hope you get it sorted OP.

See if you do this and look at the card details surely that would tell you the name of who it is.

londonmum1111 · 24/08/2025 10:36

I’m also in this situation. @Cheese123Hello@WhatsthisallaboutconfusedDid you get it sorted what do I do?

Whatsthisallaboutconfused · 24/08/2025 17:56

I’m afraid I can’t remember much now. I took the steps referred to above, to the best of my memory, and then ended up forgetting about it. No further consequences. Just weird
