Never heard this conspiracy theory

Had a woman in a coffee shop tell me that we all have a pot of gold that the government keep from us and it is worth our birth weight. Never heard this one before? Glad I was a nine pounder baby though!
Wish it was true but she also told me the real Putin is dead and the one we see now is an avatar! Conspiracy theories are bonkers!

Around 3000 tonnes of gold are mined each year, the average birth weight in the UK is 3.35kg, lets assume its the same world-wide. That gives enough gold per annum to cover 896,000 babies, however around 140 million are born each year.

@Ifailed but what if we take into account the good of the people dying be freed up?

I’m just kidding I know it’s still nowhere near enough. 😁

I don't know anything about this either, but...

My Dad came over the other day (massively in to his conspiracy theories). Told me something similar to what you've heard. He mentioned Common law & claiming back his Birth Certificate which now means he no longer needs to pay certain bills.

He tells me that if I claim my BC back that I can stop paying my electricity bill and that they can't cut off my electric unless I answer the door and admit to who I am.

I asked if he had done it and he said he was "just checking a few final things" before doing it. Erm, so encouraging me to try that out but hasn't done it himself? 😂

I'm assuming he's just been on more conspiracy theory websites and likes the sound of that one! I'd be beyond chuffed if it turns out to be true though 😂.

Sounds like the "Freemen of the land" theory.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeman_on_the_land

I'm sure the Queen of Canada was invoked when some idiot wrote to a school near me demanding that they drop all their covid restrictions.

Was genuinely surprised to find that there is an actual person pretending to be the Queen of Canada.

lurchermummy · 19/06/2022 12:22

I think in a roundabout way she is referring to a real thing ie the ending of the gold standard for currency, but she's slightly got the wrong end of the stick - a pound (in money) used to relate to the value of a pound of gold. There is no such relationship now. Money has no intrinsic value.

Sapphirejane · 19/06/2022 12:39

@lurchermummy I think in a way that’s how all conspiracy theories start. They seize on something true (i.e a birth certificate is a registered copy of the original entry) and twist it to suit their warped views.

It sounds like an old wives tale to explain the saying "worth their weight in gold" maybe?

Sounds more like that "freemen of the land" conspiracy group that used to put up billboards saying things like "The truth about legal name fraud: it is illegal to use a legal name!"

hoohaaar · 19/06/2022 08:29

@CourtneeLuv
So is that a real thing then? :0.

I'm assuming they would still cut off the electricity to the house if it wasn't paid?

I've got no idea, probably not.

I'm in a Facebook group of people who try to get out of paying their debts by using FOTL and other such bollocks.

It's both hilarious and terrifying. People will cling on to any ridiculous thing if it means they can avoid responsibility for their actions.
Apparently council tax is illegal because it's a contract that you haven't signed or something.

It's always fun when someone turns up to get advice on wriggling out of a debt and then it turns out that the debt is actually child support. Those end well...

They're all mostly anti vax/5g believers too but I guess it's all part of the Dunning Kruger overlap!

My theory is 😂
I think these people don’t believe what they say but find it funny to spread their ideas

I ditched one quite recently and I admit I am influenced by her inexplicable glee at everything she claims to believe. I quietly faded her out. It’s annoying, boring and tiring.

The problem is that some people say it for either a light hearted laugh or to troll people. Then regular people end up believing it. See free bleeding.

EmmaH2022 · 19/06/2022 18:01

In reality, the number of people not paying bills because they think this, must be tiny.
