Lens Replacement Surgery

Can anyone share their experiences of lens replacement surgery? I have booked a consultation at a clinic recommended by a colleague.

Due to my advanced years (over 50) I’m not a candidate for laser surgery.

Don’t do it. If it works, brilliant. The consequences of it not working are devastating.

I had my consultation last week. I had lots and lots of scans of the shape, health and condition of my eyes.
Due to other issues I have had with my eyes, lens replacement comes with too high a risk of retinal detachment, so I’m not suitable for it.
Due to extremely dry eyes (not that I’d noticed) I’m currently not suitable for laser surgery either. I’m currently on eye drops to see if this will recover. If they do, there is one type of laser surgery (small incision) which would improve my shortsightedness, but I’d still need glasses for reading and driving. In which case I kind of feel that I might as well just as well wear glasses all the time and not loose them!!
I won’t say I’m not dissapointed, but I respect that the surgeon hadn’t pushed me into unsuitable surgery,.

I had mine done several years ago (around 10) and got a discount as I worked for the NHS but it was still £4K. My prescription was around +7 and I needed massively thick glasses. Driving was bad because my field of vision was so narrow because of the lenses and I would walk past people to the side of me for that reason.

They operated first on one eye then a couple of weeks later the other. It wasn't at all painful as they numb the area and not as scary as I thought because I trusted the surgeon. Weird but OK. I can still remember the shock of seeing my blonde hair with all the tones for the first time, it was amazing.

I had a close up lens in one eye and a distant lens in the other and soon adjusted to my vision, and really don't see much difference between the eyes. I did need some fogging lasered off but the first eye was included in the price, the second 3 years later I had to pay for. Its a common occurance and no big deal at all.

However I can now read teeny tiny writing, dont need glasses at all, but I have some 1.5 correction £3 glasses just to make reading a bit more comfortable, but out and about I can shop and read labels and don't need any kind of glasses. the glasses I buy for £3 are because we all get shortsighted with age, and this corrects it. Been the same now for 10 years.

Should also say the best thing I ever did for myself and wish I'd done it sooner.

I was booked in for an initial appointment for next week but have just read 7Eleven's link upthread. Some scary experiences on there which are very recent. Have just cancelled the appointment to further consider if I want the risk.

regards

Is it OE that's the problem, or the surgery itself? I'd absolutely love to have this done and have recently put a £500 deposit down with OE to arrange when they open a clinic locally next year, but having read through the site above I'm now scared!

There's people on the FB group who have been to Prague.

I had mine done in Optical Express in Cardiff in March in the end. They were brilliant, can't fault them.

Really pleased with the results!
