Secondary school

We are in the process of buying a house, the one we hope will be our forever home. One of my big worries us the distance that it is from the secondary shool we hope our kids will attend. It is getting on for 3 miles away. Do secondary school pupils tend to stay late after school? There is transport when school ends, but what happens later? Do there tend to be after school clubs or anything? I don't drive so I'm really worrying about this. I feel so clueless, our kids are only just starting primary! Thanks for any advice!

DD's school ran a 'late bus' for after clubs (though we lived within walking distance).
Would they be able to cycle?
Is there public transport?

More important, would you currently get into the school under their admission criteria. (Search Secondary Admission Data for your Local Authority). If they only admit up to 2 miles away then you need to know that.

Schools can go down as well as up.

In my secondary school there are a number of after school activities (homework club, sports clubs and drama clubs) These normally run for an hour. Children are expected to organise their own way home (parents, bus, walk etc) There is no school provided transport. That being said, I think 3 miles is bikeable, especially in summer months. I used to walk to a secondary school that was 2.5 miles away. Took about 45 minutes from memory.

I guess what I'm saying is that it isn’t an insurmountable problem if your child wants to stay behind a couple of days a week after school.
