London: What would an 18 year old dd like to visit?

RingBinderInjury · 17/06/2022 18:48

Have a week booked in London with 18 yo dd in August.
So far all I have booked is a K-pop festival help me god, the Harry Potter play and the Tate modern.

These three things pretty much sum her up. She’s off to Uni to do art in September.

So what else would be fun?

I lived in London a million years ago but now know nothing about what would be good to go and see.

Camden Market? is that still a thing?

We are staying in Bloomsbury.

Neither of us will want to see anything royal family related, clothes shopping, wax works or ghost tours etc

DD loved having a cocktail in the Sky Garden. Wandering the Southbank and eating outside after the tate.
The cable cars are fun too.
London Eye with River cruise

I took my just turned 18 year old DD to London back in April. She absolutely loved the Conservatory at the Barbican centre, which also has art galleries within. I work in London but had never heard of the conservatory - she’d seen in on Instagram!

It’s free but you need to book a slot.

We also enjoyed the south bank on our trip, for the quirky food stalls by the river.

The Alchemist for cocktails and the Museum of Brands in Notting Hill.

We are going in August for a few days and DD17 and DD16 want to go to the V&A, a design museum, can't remember where it is, Camden ( we went last year) and to do some shopping - vintage places not so much Oxford street.

CatrinVennastin · 17/06/2022 20:01

Fashion and Textiles museum in Bermondsey.

Coal Drops Yard (near kings cross). Central st Martin’s in part of this and sometimes have exhibitions/shows.

you can also walk along the canal towpath to Camden.

Museum of brands in Notting hill (not sure if it’s still open but my niece said it was brilliant).

minalima.com/
House of Mina is a gallery / shop with pieces designed for the Harry Potter films
Free entry - it passed some time when me and my DD were in between the 2 HP
plays

mizu · 17/06/2022 20:19

House of Mina sounds good.

Yes to Coals Drop Yard, we went there last year.

Perpop · 17/06/2022 20:19

Sky garden, best views of the city!

NicolasSarkozysCumDumpster · 17/06/2022 20:20

My friend is a kpop fan and also 18, she liked this shop called art box

PinkArt · 17/06/2022 20:27

London Graphics Centre if she needs any supplies for next year? It's in Covent Garden so an easy detour from the Harry Potter play.
Tangentially, she could do some research into what's exhibitions are on at the Tates etc but also some of the little art galleries/ shops. If you do Shoreditch then somewhere like Nelly Duff or Jealous could be great to pop in to.

Got back last night after a fantastic week in London.
Many thanks to @Friedaseyebrow for the suggestion of the City Mapper App which I used constantly.
Thanks also to those who suggested Mina Lima. I think this was the highlight of the gallery tours we did for dd.
In the end we visited.
K-pop festival in Southwark Park 😳
Clipper boat to Greenwich, walked up to observatory in the Park (lovely) and then round the Thames path to the O2 (not very lovely but quite interesting seeing the contrast along a relative short section of the Thames).
Hyde Park (spent several very chilled hours sitting under trees people watching).
Gamer Prom at the Royal Albert Hall (probably my highlight).
Visit to several amazing bookshops: Daunt Books, massive Waterstones, Foyles.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
Book of Mormon.
V&A
Tate Modern
Mina Lima
Wellcome Collection (interesting exhibition but also felt like an oasis of calm in comparison to so many of the other galleries/museums)
Small is Beautiful exhibition (we both loved this)
Dopamine Land

Gail’s cafe also met dd’s urgent need to have a cinnamon roll in London. No idea what that was about 😂

My step counter is off the charts this past week!

Cocktail at Somerset house, they have art and a summer series of music on too. Southbank - bookstalls under the bridge, outdoor performances, national theatre etc and bars/restaurants galore, with a stroll up borough market to try different street food?
