Hair dye not working anymore! help!

Sorry if it's the wrong area but I'm unsure where else to post! I'm pretty sure Im peri menopausal based on many symptoms. Until recently I always coloured my hair/roots with no problem however in the last few months my supposedly permanent dye is washing out with 2/3 washes, washing out of the grey roots, not the rest of the hair if that makes sense!
Im so sad about this, I've accepted that I need to do more to myself these days to feel good - different make up, pencil in the ever fading eyebrows etc but I always felt good with my roots done and now that's not even working 😢 Any ideas, help suggestions? I really really really don't want to let my grey grow out, personal choice, I really don't x

I’m afraid I don’t have the answer but I’m exactly the same. Nothing covers the grey that I can do at home. I’m biting the bullet and letting it grow a while before going to a pricey hairdressers to try and get a colour which embraces the grey instead of totally trying to cover it.

Ive considered going a little lighter, may take the edge off, I know worse things can happen but it's so UNFAIR 😭

Are you sure it isn't new grey growth coming through rather than the dye washing out? I have the same issue, there is a bit of my hair right at the front on my hairline (I don't have a fringe) that is always grey again in about 2 weeks. I realised it wasn't the dye washing out, it was my hair growing quite quickly!

Very good point and that's what I e been thinking for ages until the last time I dyed it and the greys were through within two washes, the 'regrowth' was quite a bit and suspiciously the same length as the roots before I dyed it! That's when I twigged 🧐

I just went to the hairdressers home dyes washed out I ended up getting blonde highlights last year and that hides a lot.

Me too. My hair is usually an attractive mix of frazzled pinky blonde (as the permanent beige blonde now washes out to this colour within a week) grey and white around the hair line. I can't afford the hair dressers, I had decided to give non permanent a go as I read on here about using Castings and leaving it on an hour or so works well? But then found a tube of Age Perfect Colour care in the bathroom drawer (which is sort of a wash in toner) slapped half a tube on last Saturday and left for 30 mins not 10. It covered perfectly have washed it twice since then and has washed out a bit but still looks better than it did. I could cope with doing this every 10 days or so as it's just like a coloured conditioner and left my hair super shiny. Have a read of reviews on Amazon.

Are you using box dyes? I've always used pro dyes where you buy the tube (wella koleston etc) and mix it up yourself. Last time I was in a pickle and going for black so thought what the hell and picked up a box dye from the supermarket and the difference is so so noticeable.

It's not even just the washing / coverage it's the fact it looks so dull and lifeless and there is 0 shine.

Currently sitting with a plastic bag over my head hoping a dye remover will get it all out so I can go back to koleston 😂 (other brands are available!)

Oh Lordy you're brave! I wouldn't trust myself to get it extremely wrong😂 I do use box dyes, I remember year as ago being told they were the same as the hairdressers but maybe they're not! Good luck with your hair 🤞 May I ask how you remove the over colouring?

Well it's exactly the same process (i.e A + B = what you put on except you mix it in a bowl with a brush) but my cousin who's a hairdresser told me years ago they weren't the same and to avoid box ones so I just always did.

Right now I'm using ColourB4 then I'll do a couple of bleach baths to lighten it back up and get all the pigment out (fingers crossed anyway Grin)

@Resoluted sorry to jump on but where you do buy your wella hair dye from? I always use a box dye from the supermarket but would be interested to try this. Is it mega expensive? thanks

Nopeasinapasty · 17/06/2022 17:24

I do the same as @Resoluted but I use xp100. Whichever dye you go for, choose a developer that is 20 volume 6% peroxide, as that provides the best coverage for white/grey hair

Resoluted · 17/06/2022 17:27

@LuckyAmy1986 you'll find them in hair & beauty supply stores like Sally's etc but recently I've just been ordering on amazon.

You'll need the colour and a bottle of developer, then a mixing bowl, brush and gloves.

I tend to use the formulas on the wella blog for ideas / inspo. If you have a look they'll have posts for everything from warm brunettes to sunset coloured hair lol.

This is the one I'm going for tonight, ordered 2 tubes of the 55/65 from Amazon for £8.99 each yesterday and it arrived today Smile
