UK city break - where to go

Where would you recommend for a city break. Done London loads. I’ve heard good things about Manchester. We are after good places to eat and drink, shopping and some culture/places to see. Suggestions please :)

I enjoyed Manchester but I liked Liverpool more .

Took a duck bus tour around, an afternoon spent in The Cavern Club, some shopping in the fantastic Liverpool One shopping area (there is an actual beach on the top level but we didn't see as we went in Autumn) and just walking round and stopping here and there for drinks and food .
Only went for a few days but I would love to go back for the Ferry, the Catholic and CofE Cathedrals and the Liver Building as we didn't see them to go into.

@Abracadabra12345 make sure you book places to eat in the evening as it can be really busy.

Great city for bars and restaurants

Ooh can you tell us more about what there is to see outside of shopping please!

Historic Royal Docks (HMS Victory, Mary Rose museum, harbour boat trip), the submarine museum in Gosport (it’s fab), Portchester Castle, hovercraft daytrip to IoW, D Day museum, Fort Nelson, wander around Southsea. Enough for a busy few days.

Edinburgh for me! Beautiful city.

Is the airport close to the city and transportation easy? Any tips on accommodation and where to base?

SausageAndCash · 20/06/2022 08:20

Bristol.

Lots of culture, architecture, Banksy, Brunel, shopping in Clifton, hanging out around the docks / waterside.

Very good places to eat.

Compact city to enjoy, a walk over the suspension bridge is fun.

BinBandit · 20/06/2022 09:35

Edinburgh, you can get the tram direct from the airport to the city centre. Premier in do Hub hotels right in the centre which are good to access most places. Tram extension works are still ongoing down leith walk which make access a bit more awkward so I'd avoid staying too far down there.

goodpos theres the Royal dockyard, loads of naval history Mary Rose museum, the Victory, HMS Warrior. Huge dockside shopping and eating complex right on the harbour (Gun Wharf) Ferries and hovercraft to Isle of Wight.Spinnaker tower Sealife aquarium, Natural history museum. Lovely area Southsea just along the prom with beautiful gardens. Im a culture vulture, dont do shopping, and dont know how it is for children, although there is an amusement pier at Southsea. I went for 3 nights

But, as you say, you’ve never been … Grin

I love Liverpool and find it a joyous place to visit. No interest in The Beatles and have never done anything Beatle related there.

Two cathedrals, St George's Hall, many museums, historic docks and the underground tunnels, Antony Gormley statues just 15 mins on the train in Crosby, shopping, parks, walks, great restaurants and bars, theatres etc....
The Beatles is a tiny tiny part of the city - don't judge until you've been!

Liverpool and Manchester are both fantastic for a weekend. Loads to see culturally, great shopping and brilliant food.

If in Manchester the Albert Schloss is good fun. Marky Mayer is a great food place. I love the Art Galley and the Manchester Science Museum.

Liverpool www.theguardian.com/travel/2021/nov/12/liverpool-10-best-restaurants-and-food-halls

The cathedrals are both fantastic. The Philharmonic pub is a classic. There's a indoor crazy golf that's good fun if you don't mind loud music.

The Albert Dock is worth a mooch - the museums are excellent if that's your thing.

BadAtMaths2 · 20/06/2022 10:57

Belfast is a brilliant city break - absolutely loads to see and do and the food is amazing. Northern Ireland is well worth a week of anyone's holiday.

My favourite foodie break recently was Ludlow.

Just going on the tourist info on Google, they all seem to put various Beatle themed things at the top of the best 10 things to do in liverpool! Not of interest t me, but if there are lots of museums etc Im in!

Second Liverpool or York. Manchester has loads of shopping but I don’t think matches the other two for cultural stuff like museums art galleries and mooching.

So many museums and art galleries in Manchester! Nobody has mentioned Cardiff yet I think? Or Brighton?

Loads of museums, the slavery one is sobering but very well done. The museum of LIverpool is really well done too. Tate Liverpool obviously.

Also it was one of the richest cities in the world for a while (see slavery museum) so has the best architecture just scattered about. Also a couple of lovely parks.

I lived there in the 80s and liked it but hadn't really been back till about 5 years ago, it's amazing for a weekend now.
