How i can improve the condition of my hair?

It's very fragile, breaks off easily and split ends - I think this is due to my thyroid problem.

Shoulder length and looks OK but mid length to ends are awful.

I don't use any products and straighten once ir twice (at the push) per week.

I can't keep having it cut, as soon as its cut it starts splitting and breaking further up.

Any supplement, products etc that help?

Conversely my nails are growing long and strong (which is annoying as I don't do nails!)

You need to use a heat protector when straightening, every time.

ImFree2doasiwant · 17/06/2022 07:42

Can you recommend one that won't feel horrid? I don't have a lot if (any...)money so can't afford to waste it trying and not getting on with stuff.

I swear by this, repairs and seems to have thickened my hair too:

@hidinginthekitchenwithwine thank you, I should gave saud, I'm reluctant to try shampoo/conditner as I also have a very sensitive scalp. I end up itchy and flaky with most unfortunately.

I find moogoo shampoo and conditioner (v gentle) and eleven Australia miracle hair treatment (heat protection, feels lovely) best for my hair. Using this the amount of hair breakage I get has reduced massively.

ImFree2doasiwant · 17/06/2022 08:26

Thank you, I will try the heat treatment.

I currently use head and shoulders as literally everything else have trued has not worked for my scalp, apart from one I found at about £32 a bottle.

Can you not use the conditioner on just the mid lengths and ends, and avoid the scalp altogether?

Groovee · 17/06/2022 09:22

All in one milk

I use this and it lasts me a year. I found supplements vitamin B12, B6 and folic acid have really strengthened my hair after it fell out due to iron issues. My hairdresser says my hair is getting really thick again and healthy. It has taken months though.

ILoveYoga · 17/06/2022 09:32

In addition to above advice, Do you take vitamins? There are many in the market geared towards hair and nails. Going to a Holland and Barrett may be very useful.

how do you tie back your hair? Use the silk covered scrunchie will help and a silk pillow.

thrn look at how you comb or brush your hair. There are different tools for different types of hair, ie do you comb your wet hair or brush it!

do you blow dry your hair? If so, are you doing it correctly or inadvertently burning it?

minipie · 17/06/2022 10:39

I have the same hair OP, including thyroid problem.

Tried all sorts of conditioners incl the much recommended Philip Kingsley, did nothing

Olaplex no 8 however is a game changer. It really helps.

I also recommend a thyroid specific supplement. I took one for a while and my hairdresser said I’d grown a whole load of new hair!! Will find a link and send

minipie · 17/06/2022 10:41

this is the thyroid supplement I took which really helped my hair

An iron supplement is also worth trying

Pastaa · 17/06/2022 10:44

Nizoral for your scalp, Palmers coconut hair mask for your hair or garnier hair food masks.
Take iron supplements and iodine.
Hair takes longer than nails to get better. Give it 6 to 9 months.
You should cut the hair in a bad state as split ends ride up.
Try not to straighten your hair for a few months. Find a heatless updo...perfect for summer.

ImFree2doasiwant · 18/06/2022 08:15

Thanks all. I am also anaemic, and take iron fir that but its since the thyroid issue that my hair has gone rubbish.

I don't take any supplements other than the prescribed iron.

I don't often blow dry and when I do its just to dry rather than style.

I'm hopeless at styling hence the straightening, it's all I can do. My hair is quite thick, and naturally has a slight frizz about it. I'd lime to be able to put it up but am just useless!

Go and see a heath food shop assistant about a supplement. Think about investing in a keratin treatment for your hair, its a game changer in terms of not needing to mess about with straighteners in the morning.

Porridgeislife · 18/06/2022 08:20

Moving into a house with a water softener has completely changed my sensitive scalp & very fine hair for the better. It’s so much healthier now. I’ve taken all the vitamins, increased protein, used Olaplex etc.

You can get fairly cheap shower head softener attachments rather than whole house machines.

ImFree2doasiwant · 18/06/2022 08:37

@Porridgeislife I don't have a shower at all, so just the bath. 😖

I'll look into getting a supplement. I'm really struggling financially at the moment and I've noticed that they are often very expensive.

Maybe a hair mask would help. I use one regularly for my curls.

I brought this one for my boyfriend because he dyes/bleaches it regularly. He definitely has a lot less split ends and his hair seems In better condition. I don't know for certain it would help with breakage.

Get a shower attachment for the bath taps?

DeclineandFall · 18/06/2022 11:58

I have dyed, curly frizzy hair and I swim so I need to keep on top of my hair sort. Olaplex 0 and 3. Then Olaplex 9 for heat protector. Those 3 cost me £60 altogether at Sallys with discounts and deals. The 9 and 3 will last for a long time. The 0 you might need to buy a bit more often. Then you need a decent shampoo and conditioner. I buy big bottles of wella enrich that last nearly a year usually at TK maxx but you can get them online.

The other cheaper thing I see constantly recommended is Pantene shots. I am going to try them when I see them.

ImFree2doasiwant · 18/06/2022 14:37

@FlorianImogen the reasons for no shower are many and varied, but suffice to say its not possible at the moment.

@DeclineandFall thank you. Sadly out if my budget, especially as almost everything I try irritates my scalp so I end up using it up on the DC.
