Any car you like. Old or new. What would you have ? What would you steer clear of ?

My likes are rather old so forgive me if some are unfamiliar. In no particular order:

Rolls Royce Corniche Convertible. I'll settle for a Silver Shadow.

Wolseley Elf or Riley Hornet, i.e. a Mini with a boot.

Volvo 164.

Sunbeam Alpine; sister car to the Rapier, essentially a Hillman Hunter Coupe.

Chrysler Avenger. A Hillman will do but I like the big headlights on the Chrysler.

Chrysler 180/2 litre. Looks like a scaled-up Avenger.

BTW, l like the old Rootes Group cars. There was something about the styling.

No modern Audis or BMWs please.

That’s an easy one, a DB4 GT Zagato in Goodwood Green please. Steer clear of anything French or VAG.

I had a 03 Audi TT, followed by an 07 one. I liked the first one best. Is Chris Harris on Top Gear.

ToffeeNotCoffee · 17/06/2022 09:23

Classic VW Beetle all done up to look like Herbie rides again. Failing that, a modern VW Beetle all done up to look like Herbie rides again.

Or a VW Beetle in the colour and style of our old family car and I would pay to have the old number plate re-registered as a vanity plate for it.

A modern smart looking Mini.

A smart looking modern open top sports Mercedes.

Never again ?
Fiat Punto - kept us poor for a year, it just loved the local garage for another fix it.

Can I just have Chris Harris please? He can bring whatever he's driving with him

He of Top Gear fame ? Good call. Way cooler than Flintoff !

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 17/06/2022 09:27

Always fancied something big and late 1930s - maybe a Wolseley 25hp or similar.

From the 1980s through to the early 2000s I drove a Rover P4 as my everyday car. (couldn't afford the fuel bill now).
I also briefly owned a Bentley S1 - looked gorgeous, unreliable as anything. Taught me a invaluable lesson - NEVER buy a cheap Rolls or Bentley 🤣)

I did once go to see an Austin A125 Sheerline Ambulance for sale. Conplete with medical equipment and uniforms 😳.
DW wouldn't let me buy it (she was right!)

I'd love another Fiat 500. I had one when the DC were still small enough to fit into the back and driving it always improved my mood. Maybe an electric one this time (although the range is not great, strictly short city journeys only).

The last time I changed my car I test drove an iPace and I still regret not buying one even though it was way over my usual price range.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 17/06/2022 09:34

And for complete obscurity I'd love to own a Clyno. My GF worked at the factory building the wooden frames for the Weymann car bodies until they went bust in 1929.

I forgot the 'steer clear of', I had a VW Up as a courtesy car once, I was very happy to give it back at the end of the day.

I was also going to say Saga's classic Porsche 911 from The Bridge.

And a Morris Minor van

And an MGB GT

Toddlerteaplease · 17/06/2022 10:08

I want the new Toyama Yaris hybrid, just because I like the shape.

Gene Hunts red Audi Quatro would be lovely.

Great shout....

Ok I have currently got a Rav which I love. Previous was a Jeep Cherokee but the six month servicing was a killer. All time wishes, a Stag but they are expensive rustbuckets, a Bambi transformed into a motorhome or an old classic Landrover, the short wheelbase one.

Karmann Ghia or most Alfas
