I am going to Switzerland this weekend, and need to getting packing organised. I am going shopping tomorrow so can pick up anything I have forgotten.

Please share your top tips for travelling, as I haven't been abroad for ages.

Thank you Grin

Don’t forget your passport.

Seriously though- you’re a grown up! Check the weather, think of the activities you’re going to do, and pack accordingly with the space you have. Don’t forget about the toiletries and make up bedding to be in one of those uselessly small plastic bags if you’re hand luggage only.

How long are you going for and what are you planning to do?

I'm away for a week. I tend to overpack, and then forget the one essential thing.

So far on my list is face sun cream. And a water bottle.

Will there be a washing machine or are you intending on visiting a laundrette? is this packing just for you?

SwissMaid · 16/06/2022 15:03

No washing facilities, so need enough clothes for the week. Will be doing lots of walking. Can't decide if I should just take trainers, or proper walking shoes.

Charging cables of everything and an adapter

Ducksinthebath · 16/06/2022 15:07

My top tip: look at what you’ll be doing there, look at the weather there, look at the duration of the trip…then pack an appropriate outfit for each day and activity within a day.

I appreciate it might have been a while but surely you can work out what to pack for a holiday you’ve arranged yourself?

SwissMaid · 16/06/2022 15:08

Ooh yes, and I just remembered a cork screw. Abroad wine is always corked.

Wear walking shoes, pack trainers

bare · 16/06/2022 15:13

Good socks, lightweight trousers x 2, vests, t shirts, lightweight jumper/fleece x 2, pants, bras, pj's, coat. Two sets of evening, after walking things. Swimming cossie and towel.

Insect repellent, adaptor, chargers, sun hat and glasses.

SwissMaid · 16/06/2022 15:18

I know @Ducksinthebath but I am excited and don't want to forget anything Smile

Packing cubes are a game changer.

Leftbutcameback · 16/06/2022 15:21

I always go through the days and activities in my mind, and based on that weather. So for my hols next week it’s walking, spa, dinner in hotel, and so on the water. Weather similar to here. I then go through what I think I’ll wear every day in my mind and make a list. Harder if the weather if more changeable, easier if it’s a hot beach holiday!

I also take a tube of washing liquid so I can wash anything light.

Leftbutcameback · 16/06/2022 15:22

Also plan for possible travel disruption- so books, download stuff to watch, snacks, and spare undies and medication in carry on.

SwissMaid · 16/06/2022 15:29

@bare I wasn't sure if I needed insect repellent, I've added to the list.

My standard packing list for 1 adult 1 week (7 days 6 nights) no clothes washing:
8 pairs of underwear in a style and colour suitable for your clothes
6x bras in a style and colour suitable for your clothes and activities
8x socks suitable for walking
2x PJ. If you sleep in the nude take at least one or a dressing gown in case there is a fire alarm in the night and you need to get out pronto
2 x bathing suits if you are intending on swimming
pack 3 pairs of shoes: flipflops if you're swimming, smart shoes for dinner, proper walking shoes and wear the trainers on your feet for the airport
1x scarf
1x hat
1x smart dress or more if you are going to have fancy dinners
1x tights if you wear tights with your dress and goes with your smart shoes as it might be chili at night
4x bottoms
8x tops
1x raincoat thin
1x jacket or fleece
1x backpack
1x water bottle
1x chargers and battery bank
Jewellery if you wear any but don't bring anything too precious.

1x your dental kit (charger too if it's an electric toothrbrush)
1x your make up kit (including make up remover)
1x your hair kit (hairbrush, bobbles etc, I find the hotel's shampoos are very drying. You could also buy these when you're there)
1x your hygiene kit (sanitary products if needed, nail file and clippers, ear buds if you use them, deodorant, razors (buy the foam or use a shaving bar as it might explode from pressure, if you wear contact lenses bring glasses too and your cleaning solution and eyedrops etc...)

1x empty plastic bag for dirty clothes

Plug adapters for switzerland, ear buds for noise, eye mask
Book or kindle, music playlist or podcast.

Pen and paper (small notebook?)

Any medication you take and the prescription for it.
Plasters and foot blister stuff (compeed)

A lot depends on your activities and how low or high maintenance you are!

SwissMaid · 16/06/2022 15:40

Thank you @Pastaa that's very comprehensive.

skgnome · 16/06/2022 15:45

An extension lead!
that way you just need one (or two) power adapters and you can charge several electronics at the time, even in hotel rooms (that tend to have one plug)

SwissMaid · 16/06/2022 16:08

@skgnome I've heard that using an extension lead can overload the power in some of these forin hotels

Also a plastic bag for your carry on liquids, and don't forget to take out electrics including straighteners if in your carry on (at security)

Rshard · 16/06/2022 17:00

For a recent trip I bought a travel adapter which also has two usb sockets as well as two plug sockets so just needed to take cables rather than plugs for a couple of our devices. Really handy, was from Sainsburys.

Now that's interesting, I will look for one of those. I didn't know they existed.

I have hold luggage, so plan to glide through the airport with a tiny bag, looking stylish.

Here's a template I set up as a Google document for my kids. Used tick-boxes (under the bullet points options) so they could tick things off on their phones, which seemed to make it all much more interesting than doing it on paper 🙃
