Nice seaside places near London

Can anyone recommend nicest seaside places not to far from London and reachable by train? Just came back from abroad and promised the kids to do a couple of trips to the seaside over the summer but not sure where to go. I find some of the British seaside a little depressing having grown up abroad. Where would you recommend for the day or a short weekend. Any suggestions of somewhere nice to go?

If you are in east London Frinton is very easy to get to by train (10 to 20 min walk to beach depending on length of childrens' legs ), lovely sandy beaches although completely covered at high tide, green sward. Possible downside is there are no shops/ icecream/ cafes on the sea front, you have to go to the (charming) high street - this is also an upside for some. This is why when the children were little we used to go to Walton instead, although it is more downmarket - the station is practically on the (also lovely and sandy) beach, there are plenty of food and drink places and a pier for when the tide is in.

The lack of tat for sale at the beach in Frinton is one of my number one reasons for going there, as well is it being a gorgeous sandy beach. Took the kids to Cromer once and it was a non stop whinge fest, wanting icecream and rides and arcade games and plastic shit. Frinton is sand and water. Perfect.

Hove
West Worthing
Both beaches are 10 mins walk from the station, and have playground and cafe next to the beach. Pebbly until the tide is out and there's a big strip of mostly sand, shallow and lovely.

West Sussex

Worthing
Littlehampton
Climping
Shoreham on Sea
The Witterings

Ryde - by train. HAs sandy beach and lovely old fashioned feel.
Otherwise Leigh on Sea, Broadstairs and Littlehampton are the ones I like.

Ryde as in the Isle of Wight? Grin

Hey OP

Its not the seaside but I did notice on my Facebook Feed something about London Beaches to be set up .

Perhaps a visit there could be fitted in, closer to Home for one day .
Not sure where they will be set up but it was either via Ian Visits or Londonist.

Echo others for Broadstairs and Margate, direct trains and lovely beaches - and Margate station is almost on the beach. If you're looking for an overnight stay, Margate has a Premier Inn by the seafront, and Ramsgate has a Travelodge right by the marina, have had several inexpensive overnights there (station a bit further away at Ramsgate but there's a frequent bus down to the harbour)

My parents used to take us to Walton-on-the-Naze for caravan holidays in the 60s. Beach huts, safe sandy beaches when the tide was out (shingle when it was in), cafes and ice-cream and shops and then every evening sixpence each to spend on the rides at the little fairground on the pier and a cone of chips to share on the walk back to the caravan. Heaven!

Love Frinton on Sea, some nice places for dinner nearby and those amazing Art Deco houses. Would love to live in one of those. Lovely sandy beach too but a bit of a trek from the station.
