Tell me I'll laugh at this one day!

I feel horrendous!
Baby DS was asleep in his cot. We had an appointment but I wanted to give him as much time asleep as possible. Cleverly, I loaded the pram up in the car to go while he was still in his cot. Then I got in the car and drove off! Luckily, I realised at the junction and looped round as quickly as I could. Though it felt like an age! Must have been 3-4 minutes tops and DS was still asleep when I got back. Feel like an awful mother!

It happens, you realised immediately and went straight back for him. He was in a safe place in his cot and no harm came to him.

It feels awful now but you definitely will tell it as an anecdotal story one day!

worraliberty · 15/06/2022 15:33

Oh dear, when my DS was 4 he was at the Dentist.

The receptionist called me outside the room for a minute as DS was perfectly happy chatting to the Dentist in the chair.

After we finished speaking I said, "Ok thanks, bye!" and went to leave the surgery until she pointed out I'd forgotten DS 😂😂

elfycat · 15/06/2022 15:40

That is so, so normal. He was asleep and in a safe place where no harm could come to him. And it was a handful of minutes.

It makes you shaky because you're worried about your own lapse in focus - and what else could you do in a lapse? The answer is probably not much - your thoughts gathered themselves in good time.

We've probably all done it, or something similar, when distracted, sleep deprived or out of routine.

I did exactly this when DD was a baby. She's now 13 and thought it was very funny when I told her about it recently.

Mariposista · 15/06/2022 16:15

You will definitely laugh at this one day - and it will be something your kid will be able to hold over you as a teenager when he wants money for sweets 😂Oh dear OP, why is it always that when we are think we are being so organised and sorted that we end up doing the very opposite.
FWIW, I once did a time out, and forgot about going back to get him. Realised half an hour later and there he was, having a nap on the time out spot. hahahahaha

Basilbrushgotfat · 15/06/2022 16:19

Don't worry. I think David Cameron, his wife and their other children got home before they realised they'd left their baby at the pub.

mosesbassist · 15/06/2022 16:20

That's so funny! Sorry OP

A friend of mine forgot to bring her son to his christening. They were in a rush and let him sleep in his cot. They ran to the church - luckily the same road as their house and apologised to everyone for being late. It wasn’t until the vicar said where is the baby that they looked at each other and ran out of the church to go and get him.

MargaretThursday · 15/06/2022 16:48

My PIL left all three of their sons behind from a day out one day. They both got home separately and thought the boys were being quiet, but were enjoying it. They only realised when one of the friends they'd gone with phoned them. 🤣

bizzey · 15/06/2022 16:57

I said ..
" Nite nite , god bless , see you in the morning"
Sending my 6 year old into school .

My friend pointed out ...I maybe said the wrong thing !

IthinkIsawahairbrushbackthere · 15/06/2022 16:59

It happened to my husband. My mother in law only realised when she heard his sister and her friend giggling about it and when straight back to find him fast asleep in his carrycot on the kitchen table.

timestheyarechanging · 15/06/2022 18:27

I'm 51 now but when I was a baby my parents had one of those huge silver cross prams and had to buy a van to fit it in.

One day, we'd just got home and mum asked dad to get me out but he didn't hear her and she went inside thinking he'd brought me in and put me in my cot. No, he'd left me in the pram, in the van, in the garage.

Was a while later she went up to check on me and I wasn't in the cot - think dad was in trouble!! I was still asleep

Hugasauras · 15/06/2022 18:35

DH's sister got left at the beach once. There were several carloads of them with cousins and stuff and each lot thought she must be with someone else till they got home Grin Apparently it was a very speedy drive back to the beach with his mum at the wheel! They found her with some old ladies who had discovered her Grin

FriendlyPineapple · 15/06/2022 18:37

Sorry but that's really funny!

My mum left my brother in the butchers and got the bus home 😁

Livedandlearned · 15/06/2022 18:52

I left baby ds in his car seat on the kitchen table and drove off. It's easily done.

itsgettingweird · 15/06/2022 18:55

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Yep - done that!

Put ds down in his car seat in the shade whilst I loaded his pushchair and the bags.

Go in and drive off.

Luckily my road is circular and so I saw him as I came back past.

He's now 17 and none the worse for being abandoned at 3 weeks old Grin

Sswhinesthebest · 15/06/2022 18:56

I’ve left the car and walked home. I must be a better mother than you because it was only the car. 😃

coffeetofunction · 15/06/2022 19:00

I've done this.... Baby having afternoon nap in her cot. I went to school to collect the others from school. Pulled up at school and realised I had left the baby at home. Luckily only a 4-5 minute drive and she was still asleep. I felt the worst mother in the world at the time but I'd forgotten about it till I read this.

11Hawkins · 15/06/2022 19:01

I forgot that the kids where at school once.
Got a phone call "are you picking the kids up today?" Blush

poorbuthappy · 15/06/2022 19:01

We left a twin the council offices when they were about ,4 months old. We'd just paid an eye watering amount of money for building regs and DH picked up twin 1 and I sailed out of the building leaving twin 2. He's never let me forget it.

Hellocatshome · 15/06/2022 19:03

I left my baby at nursery. Went in to pick him up, got distracted by the receptionist asking me to fill in some forms etc, when I had finished I said "ok then bye" and left, got in the car drove half way home had an "oh shit" moment at the traffic lights and went back for him. The receptionist said "I did wonder if you were coming back?" We all had a good laugh, life went on no harm done.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 15/06/2022 19:05

My DGM forgot my uncle on holiday in Jamaica. Like… boarded the plane, and didn’t realize she didn’t have her baby until an airline worker walked down the aisle holding my uncle saying “whose baby is this?”

DGF wondered whether they should own up to being the forgetful parents, or cut their losses and make another baby when they got home. 😂 Ahhhhhh different times…

Needless to say, my uncle was fine. But we do still tease my DGPs about it!

I accidentally kissed the wrong boy once when my son's line started moving, after the bell rang. Poor kid wouldn't come near me for years! 😬

He's 30 now and still mentions it whenever he sees my son 😂😂

Bootothegoose · 15/06/2022 19:08

We’ve all done something ridiculous. It’s being overly tired, frazzled and just working on auto pilot!

I couldn’t list the stupid shite I did with mine. They’re still living and breathing don’t worry!

LadyCampanulaTottington · 15/06/2022 19:12

My friend left her newborn DD in the doctors office after the baby’s first checkup.

She cried thinking they would call social services but the receptionist told her she’d be rich if she had a euro for every baby left behind 😂
