Driving lessons help

Did anyone feel they just was not getting the hang of driving lessons?

I had to take a break because of having an operation. Then only went back and it a very good lesson.

I don't want to give up but financially can't afford them. Plus I feel just not getting it.

I need lesson each week so I don't forget.

How did you find driving lessons? Was you a slow learner?

I learned very late in life and yes it took absolutely ages. I took lessons for 9 months. Some weeks I felt I just wasn't getting it at all and never would. Sometimes it would be one step forward, two steps back. Some days I'd get home just raging with frustration at how hard it was.

But then suddenly it all clicked into place, I passed my test first time with just two minors and really love driving now. My advice is that if you can possibly find the money to keep going, you really must. It's such an important life skill and will open up the world to you. And that sense of achievement when you can tear up your L Plates and just drive to the shops is amazing. Hang in there if you can.

I was a very slow learner but got there in the end. I did 100 hours over couple years. I failed theory few times for not revising as my life at that point was going out clubbing or to the pub getting drunk! Funny the time I did revise I passed! Anyway 100 hrs later and I passed 3rd time. I wasn't very confident then. This was 22 years ago. Just keep going it's only been 1 lesson. You'll get there but it will take time.

how are you now after your operation? Are you physically and mentally into it or do you feel you would benefit from more recovery time? I’ve been doing lessons for 1.5 years weekly. With a small break I think 6 weeks in between lockdown. And another small break when my instructor had covid. I have my test this coming Friday. My instructor feels like I’m ready. I promise you. I wasn’t getting it for ages. Ages. Watch ‘advance driving school’ on YouTube. My driving instructor recommended it. And now I’m in a position where I’m attempting my first test. Honestly. You’ll get there. I was £35 a week and it was absolutely flooding me financially so I sympathise! I’m putting my final 2 hours on a credit card this week or I wouldn’t be able to sit my test. I hope you get the hang of it soon and I hope your operation went well! X

Sorry I didn't answer you question.

I feel physically fine but just felt so nervous.
She said you keep freaking out and she got me on roundabouts.
I felt bad I made her break her nails as she had to keep grabbing the wheel. I feel like I probably need lesson every day because just not getting it

I’m currently learning and apparently it can take a bit longer the older you are,I’m 39
ive been taking lessons around a year now,1 hour a week although I’ve had few gaps with holidays or kids being off school.
Ive also felt I’m not getting it but recently my instructor has said my general driving is good now,it’s concentrating on the manoeuvres now.
I still can’t imagine myself being completely ready for a test but I’m starting to feel more confident that I will get there.
im determined not to give up as it would make such a difference to my life and not feeling like I have to rely on other people for help/lifts

TidyDancer · 15/06/2022 23:43

A change of instructor was revolutionary for me. I took a while to learn but literally the first two lessons with the new one was when everything sort of fell into place. I can't even remember why I left the first one now, but with hindsight he was a really terrible teacher. No real explanation was forthcoming from him on anything I was doing and I was making very little progress for such a long time. I didn't realise how not good he was until I switched. It's maybe worth considering if this may be a factor?

CavernousScream · 16/06/2022 08:08

Could you switch to automatic? That is much quicker to learn.

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 16/06/2022 08:11

Sounds like you need a different, calmer instructor OP. My DH is a driving instructor & I’m pretty sure he doesn’t grab the steering wheel!

I'm 39 and do wish I done this when I was younger. But I was a very confident person then..so driving was a no no.

I am sure your doing great and will pass in no time.

I changed my instructor to a woman. She is much better.
I am doing an automatic aswell.
I spent so long trying to get the steering and still not quite right.

I have just restarted lessons after 3 years but in an automatic. I suffer from anxiety. I had my first lesson with my new instructor and enjoyed it but there was a couple of things my instructor said that made me say to my husband when I got in that the instructor was a bit of a twat. Anyway I put it down to an age thing given I’m in my 40’s. 2 days before my next lesson I messaged my instructor to find out his cancellation policy and made him aware that my kids and I were ill and I was on antibiotics that were making me nauseous. Got a reply back saying I had until 8pm the day before to let him know what I wanted to do. I thanked him for the info and messaged him 9am the day before my lesson apologising that I would need to cancel and reschedule. He replied back that he would look at his diary and get back to me in the evening. That didn’t happen and it is now 4 days since his reply. It is really hard to find instructors at the moment, so do I chase or accept that he doesn’t want my business? It is currently a 6 months wait to book a test so I’m wondering if I should get my theory done which is booked and start the instructor search again then.
