When to see GP about periods

I had a baby 18 months ago. Not on any contraception. My period cycles have been getting shorter and are now every 22 days and last 6-7 days, very heavy and very painful (they have always been like this even on the pill) I did go for one transvaginal scan about five years ago due to my periods and nothing showed up. I have just started another period today, my last one finished last week. I’m so worried, don’t know what to think. I’m 34.

I would say there isn't any harm going to your GP for a check up if it's worrying you.

Yes, I would want to rule out early menopause and anything else sinister they might think of and get some sort of treatment.

I have similar and my gp are refusing to help as I won’t have a mirena .

they basically told me they won’t check for early menopause because ‘it’s not possible if you are having periods’

@NotSur how old are you?

You do need to see the GP to get a GYN referral. But I would not mention early menopause because there’s a dozen reasons why you could be bleeding so often. In addition, not every bleed is a period, so don’t assume you are having extra periods. Don’t self-diagnose. Just the facts…you are bleeding almost constantly and do not know why.

Your periods have changed and it is interfering with your life. This is the time to see your GP. I would expect them to take a thorough history ,which could be done in a phone appointment, arrange blood tests eg full blood count, thyroid and FSH and to follow you up ,possibly with examination and a scan. A gynae referral around here would take ages and you wouldn't gain anything in the early stages of wondering about cause and management.

Ebonyhorse · 14/06/2022 15:43

anyone know how long a referral will take?

I’d still get a GYN referral done right away. They do take awhile, but all the blood tests and such can be done while waiting for a GYN appointment to come through. If it’s something really serious, you don’t want to have delayed getting the referral in the system.

I’m so fed up of periods!

@Ebonyhorse 39

NotSur · 14/06/2022 20:46

I’m having to go private for my bloods as my gp just point blank refuses and my cycles have shortened by 8-10 days
