Should I send dd to school, chicken pox related.

Has anyones child ever caught chicken pox after being vaccinated against it? I know its possible, I'm more wondering how it affected them. My dd is 7 and got the vaccine in early 2020. Her teacher text over the weekend to say a child in her class has chickenpox. I replied and thanked her for letting me know, said dd is vaccinated and fingers crossed we might escape it.
This morning at 11 teacher sends me a pic of dd with a spot on her face. Wasn't there this morning when she went into school, teacher confirmed this. Teacher had checked tummy and back, no other spots present.
She asked if i thought it could be cp. I said i was unsure and asked if i should collect dd. Teacher said she'd leave it up to me. I replied and said I'd leave her for now but text if any more spots appear and I'd come immediately. Teacher sent me a paragraph from a website stating you can still catch cp even after vaccine. She then text me and said that she's not sure if dd should attend school trip to a play centre tomorrow in case it is chicken pox. I said I'd keep an eye on her this evening and if any more spots appear will keep her home. Teacher said to keep an eye on the spot on her face and she'd trust my instinct. Dd just gone to bed. Still just that spot on her cheek. None anywhere else. No temp, cold symptoms, anything.
I have my doubts that this is cp but feel teacher would prefer me not to send dd. What would you do?

If no more spots appear and she feels well, I'd send her. Sometimes kids get a spot.

Sirzy · 13/06/2022 19:44

I would try to visit your local pharmacist for advice

Taleas0ldastime · 13/06/2022 19:48

@Sirzy the pharmacies here don't open until after dd should have left for school so wont have a chance in the morning. I had called the GP and was waiting on them to call me back but they never did.

Don't take a child with potential CP into a pharmacy!

MolliciousIntent · 13/06/2022 19:52

Just one spot on the face, no temp and not unwell, and vaccinated? No way I'd make a kid miss a fun trip for that.

I'd also be a bit sceptical of the teacher's motives. No one would assume a single spot with no other symptoms is chickenpox in a vaccinated child. Any chance they're short staffed and she's trying to get you to keep your DD off so they have the correct staff ratios? Our nursery have occasionally done similar when staff are off sick.

Pharmacists are qualified to give advice on exactly such issues. For something like CP I would go to a pharmacy and as the pharmacist to come out to see the spot rather than take the child in.

MadeForThis · 13/06/2022 20:26

If there has only been one spot on her face since this morning I would doubt it's chicken pox.

glamourousindierockandroll · 13/06/2022 20:41

I wouldn't take one spot very seriously. Both of my children were absolutely covered, and still are very marked 6 weeks later. First ones appeared on their tummy and back.

prescribingmum · 13/06/2022 20:44

One spot could be an insect bite! I certainly would not be jumping straight to chicken pox for one isolated spot and no more appearing for the next 24 hours, especially as the child is vaccinated

TheYearOfSmallThings · 13/06/2022 20:46

If it's still just one spot by tomorrow morning I would expect to send her in. It could be a bite, it could be a pimple...if it was chickenpox you would see more picks developing by then.

Toomuchtime2021 · 13/06/2022 20:51

One of my twins had chicken pox after being vaccinated. It went through the whole year group at school. She had a single spot to start, then the next day had 4. Only 2 blistered and the others faded away. They were definitely CP. It is well documented that they can still get it, just milder. Interestingly her twin had nothing!

Taleas0ldastime · 13/06/2022 21:01

@Toomuchtime2021 thank you, yes I've read that they can still catch it but a milder version. But nowhere really explained what that could actually look like! Interesting to hear about your experience, thank you.

DS has chicken pox at the moment. There were 2 spots on Friday morning (which I thought were bites) but about 10 by the evening. By Saturday morning there were loads so you are likely to see more soon if it is cp. He isn't vaccinated though so I would expect a milder version for your DD. I would also be surprised if the first one came up on her face as trunk is more likely.

JellyBellybutton · 13/06/2022 21:10

My kids are both vaccinated. Both went to a birthday party which spread chicken pox, one of them didnt get it at all, the other had a singular spot on back, no other symptoms. If your daughter has no more spots tomorrow then I'd be carrying on as normal.

Of course they are qualified. But there could be anybody else in there that could be vulnerable. Immunosuppressed, pregnant for example.
You aren't supposed to take a possible case of chicken pox to a GP or hospital without making arrangements for a separate waiting place first.
At the very least phone first.

Caughtshort · 13/06/2022 23:09

I was responding to the pp who just advised OP to take the child to the pharmacist.
Some people don't always know about asking the pharmacist to come outside.

Dinoteeth · 14/06/2022 07:09

Op you don't know if the teacher is vulnerable in any way I don't think you should send her, esp if she has more spots today.

Thursday37 · 14/06/2022 07:19

DD is still at nursery, they had CP in her room and she had one non itchy spot come up at the same time on her cheek. No symptoms. She is vaccinated. I wasn’t sure if they were connected or not and so we just ignored it. The spot went away in a couple of days with no mark.
I wouldn’t keep off for one spot and no signs of illness.

BrassyLocks · 14/06/2022 07:53

Whether one spot or 50 she could still be contagious, so it won't be fair on the other children and adults to let her interact. Chicken pox in pregnant women can harm the foetus.

ClocksGoingBackwards · 14/06/2022 07:56

I would send her. One spot does not indicate chicken pox. Your child is healthy so should be at school, and she especially shouldn’t be excluded from a fun trip for the sake of one spot and paranoia.

If she was going to miss out on stuff when she’s perfectly well, what was the point in having her vaccinated?

dementedpixie · 14/06/2022 07:59

If the spot looks like a blister then I'd keep her off. If it just looks like a pimple I'd send her in

Gunpowder · 14/06/2022 08:03

Whether there is one spot or 200 I think chicken pox is pretty unmistakeable. If the spot hasn’t blistered and there are no more I would definitely send her in. It’s probably a mosquito bite. If there are blistered spots or a fever I’d keep her off.

Howshouldibehave · 14/06/2022 08:04

One spot is not terribly concerning. I’m amazing you get this many texts including photos, over the weekend from a school teacher though!

TulipsGarden · 14/06/2022 08:07

Does it look like a chicken pox spot? (Raised pustule in the middle) If not, and if no more spots have come up by this morning, then it's almost certainly not chicken pox.

Taleas0ldastime · 14/06/2022 08:59

It looked like a pimple, slightly raised in the middle yesterday but flat today and slightly faded. No more spots came up overnight and temp didn't go over 36.7 since yesterday so I've sent her in.
