I'm trying to compile my food shop for the week (2 adults 3 kids and a dog) I always struggle what to buy for lunches and dinners. What sort of bits and pieces do you through in your trolly?

Meal plan each meal for the whole week, and only buy what is needed for those meals so it varies each week.

I agree. You need to look at what’s already in your fridge, freezer, cupboards and meal plan.

I meal plan 7 meals, a mix of veggie and non veggie. I will sometimes throw in something to have in the freezer for DS just in case we are home late. Then breakfast stuff and snacks for DS. I also put in some nice rolls and sandwhich fillings plus fruit. Then any toiletries. It’s much easier to shop from a list of you meal plan, there are lots of recipes on the internet or threads on here for meal planning inspiration.

Noodles, veg, cold meats (eg. Ham), yogurts, wraps, naan bread, chicken (with noodles or curry for the naan)

Generally starting points for meals so there's less thinking to do when it comes to cooking.

Is this what you meant?

This week we have rice and dal with aubergine pickle, noodles with salmon teriyaki, quiche with baked potatoes and salad. Lasagna and salad (leftovers from last week) and not sure about Friday, depends a bit if dsd has come home by then (university has finished)

I do a meal plan, then check the cupboards for ingredients/spices/ and anything else we need like washing up liquid, then I go and buy the stuff needed to make all the meals, plus extras if there’s money in the budget for it.

dancingmarshmallow · 13/06/2022 14:21

@lisavanderpumpscloset yes that's what I ment Hun, thanks 😊 I get so bored of buying the same things so was looking inspiration although I didn't word my list very well.

I also try and buy stuff I don't particularly like but I know is good for me (fish) to make me eat it!

Then also plan for one or two dishes eg. I'll buy mince to whack in the slow cooker for a chilli. Generally don't meal plan but buy food with ideas in mind of what I fancy eating

Stir fry is the easiest. Noodles, veg, meat if you eat it and a sauce. Done. Same goes for pasta actually, just vary the sauce or meat etc

I am hit or miss with meal planning. I tend to write down 5-6 meals and then go by what I feel like that day. I shop almost daily as it just suits me to do it this way.

breakfasts are always yoghurt and fruit and weetabix, so that is covered. I don't think about it.

The Dcs have school lunches. I take leftovers or cook up pasta with pesto sauce and black olives opr pasta with tuna and mayo and cherry tomatos.

Dinners this week are ;

  • fish goujons with rice and broccoli
  • pasta with parmesan cream sauce and green salad
  • steak and jacket potatos and spinach.
  • Bratwurst from Lidl with peas and potato salad
  • roast chicken with bread sauce (a craving) and roast veg.

Like others have said, I do a meal plan and try to stick to it. I always make sure I have some bits in the cupboard/fridge to put something quick together when I can't be bothered to cook a big meal eg - spaghetti, bacon, garlic and olive oil = a very easy, basic pasta dish, but if I didn't make that pasta dish then I could use those ingredients for something else.
Things I buy weekly: pitta breads and hummus (for packed lunches/kebabs/snacks).
Bacon
Eggs
Minced beef
Rotisserie chicken (great for fajitas, sandwiches, a quick dinner of chicken and mash etc)
Brocolli
Cauliflower
Greek yoghurt (for smoothies, to add herbs to for a dip to go with grilled meats, breakfasts with fruit and honey etc)
Lemons, limes for marinating chicken
Frozen veg and fruits
Always have some baked beans in the cupboard and potatoes too for easy dinners.

SummerLobelia · 13/06/2022 14:48

What I always keep on hand are;

  • pasta

  • passata / chopped tomatos

  • jarred pesto

  • potatos

  • rice

  • eggs

  • apples

  • lemons

  • carrots

  • celery

  • onions

  • chicken nuggets

  • mince meat

So in a pinch I can make spagetti bolognese, jacket potatos, something like that.

For lunches this week DP is having homemade quiche and I’m having tempeh salad wraps. For dinners we’re having: pasta with courgette and broad beans, chickpea and cauliflower curry, chilli, Thai green curry with tofu and veg. Then I also get fruit (this week tangerines, kiwis, bananas and grapes), milk, bread, avocados, carrots, whatever snacks DP wants (usually involves Wensleydale!), and dairy-free yoghurt for me.
