Is this worrying? I don't even know anymore.

Noticed news this morning about UK farming changes and gene editing British food and animals. I am not getting much from searches about finer details, but if someone can help me understand the implications?

Is this harmful to our environment/animal welfare at all? I have no faith whatsoever in the future of this government so my views are generally negatively biased.

Here is a link to the BBC story.

Am also concerned about why environmentalists suggest it is bad for green initiatives.

AFAIK the editing is done to reduce the risk of failed crops to disease and limit use of pesticides etc. It's not being done to alter the the food itself i.e. to make the tomatoes more red or the cabbage have more vitamin C.

I don't think it's causing direct harm to the environment, if anything it reduces food waste by creating healthier crops surely? Not sure of the full implications though

Thanks.
I read that it involved tomatoes containing more vit D, so definitely have heard about modifying. It also reported animals, and green concerns. I just can't locate any decent info online for some reason.

I also think it's tragic that the gov are using the excuse of reducing food poverty, whilst not actually addressing why people are in poverty to start with. When issues like this arise, it generally means reducing quality, and I hope there will be consumer choice and options for farmers to still produce organic, etc.
