Family tree question, any advice on how I can find the d.o.b of my Grandad, when I only know when and where he died?

My Grandad died in 1945 (he was a fair bit older than my Grandma),and I’d love to be able to find out more about him.
However, I believe that death certificates from that time generally don’t have the date of birth of the deceased on them, so although it’s a long shot, I’m wondering if there’s any way at all I may be able to find out more information about him?

Unfortunately he had a popular name and surname, which would make things more difficult, and my Grandma didn’t tell us much about him other than he was born in 1892, in London, I believe.
As mentioned, the only details I have are his name, date of death and place of death.

I’m stuck at a brick wall not knowing how to find more info on him, and I’d appreciate any advice!

Sorry if this has been suggested already, but if you have Ancestry and know the date of death, have you tried finding the National Probate Calendar entry? There’s varying amounts of info in there, but there may be the name or names of his executors, which could help you find relatives.

You can even apply for a copy of the will if you find the right entry. I did this for some of my ancestors (although I’ve forgotten how), and they were fascinating!

Sorry I think I may have missed this post, I’ll look into this too.

Not sure if you saw the points in my previous post near the bottom of page 2, but to add a few more:

If he had a servants he may have had his own business, in which case look in Kelly's trade directory for the town where he was or may have been living.

What records do you have for your Gran - is she in the 1939 register? If not her father then who was given as head of the household she was living in?

Does someone in the family have a box of photos, newspaper clippings, telegrams, old ration/ National Identity/ NHS cards?
What family did/does your uncle have - do you have cousins who might know more?

It might be on his gravestone? Some are online nowadays on FindAGrave. If you know the area he died in from his death certificate you can email the cemeteries teams (sometimes there’s a fee, sometimes not) in the local area to try and track down a gravestone, or you could search local newspapers on British Newspaper Archive (also on FindMyPast) to see if a death announcement gives any details about surviving family?

If you need anything searching btw I have an Ancestry and FindMyPast subscription - feel free to pm me!

Yes sorry I did see your comments and meant to reply, unfortunately we know absolutely nothing about my Grandad other than his name, date of death and the supposed age he was when he died.
My Gran did mention she’d worked as his maid, but I’m not sure if or how wealthy he was for her to have worked for him.

I’ve no idea if he had siblings or if he was in the military unfortunately. It’s like looking for a needle in a giant haystack, but I’m hoping I get some clues from the certificates I’ve ordered which should arrive this week.

The census records don’t show them together either.

Thank you I appreciate that. There isn’t a headstone I’m afraid, nothing at all.

Hi OP, did you receive your certificates?

Hi OP, did you receive your certificates?

Hi yes I did.
Unfortunately though there wasn’t a d.o.b on my Grandad’s death certificate, and the address given by my Gran (who was the informant of his death) doesn’t really help me as he died in 1945, and so the 1939 census records for the address show different people living there, people with different surnames too, so I can’t even try and link him with any of those residents.

My Uncle’s birth certificate gives two addresses, (he was born in 1940, just after the census), but again, I’ve found the names of the residents at both addresses, and nothing seems to link to my Grandparents.

I’ve taken an ancestry DNA test, so I MAY hopefully find some connections to my Grandad through that.

I don’t know what else I can do really, any tips from anyone welcome!

I did consider this, but I’m unsure if it’s very accurate every time?

I've recently done my dna having been researching my family lines for decades. It has proven that 99% of my research is correct. I've been dna matched to cousins including distant cousins that I already knew of (or suspected they were related). It's shown a reasonably large % of celtic ancestry from one parent, which I already knew about - so I'm pretty happy with it.

When I get into research I'm a big 'dog with a bone' and keep going back to things to try to find solutions so if you'd like me to look I'm happy to try to help - just PM me the info you have.

Hi OP, did you ever get anywhere with this?
