Did you drink tea regularly as a child?

I was born in the late seventies , growing up I always drank milky tea at breakfast and dinner and during the day when I wasn't at school.

Giving a baby milky tea from a bottle was also common practice. I have been thinking about this and was curious to know if this was a class / cultural thing or just "what people did in those days."

I grew up in a white working class "done good" family.

I drank milky sugary tea as a child. I don’t think my parents understood that it contained caffeine or that sugar was bad for me. That’s probably why it was more common in uneducated families.

XenoBitch · 11/06/2022 22:24

I can't actually remember when I started drinking tea. We got paid 5p for making cups for our parents though. Had to earn our pocket money.

SisterAgatha · 11/06/2022 22:24

Yes I had tea all the time and at my nans I had my own mug and I’d have loads of sugar in it.

Same background as you. When the kids were small I had lots of questions about did the kids want a tea in their bottles. My eldest will have a tea here and there when it’s cold but he’s a teenager almost!

Yes! Milky, sugary and in a plastic cup! Whenever we went to my nans, drove my mum mad.

onedayiwillflyaway1 · 11/06/2022 22:25

Yes sugary milky tea in a bottle born early seventies. Also warm milk on rusk biscuits for breakfast and supper.

thecurtainsofdestiny · 11/06/2022 22:26

Yes, tea with milk and sugar. Stopped the sugar at some point - I can't remember why or when.

ToldItToTheBees · 11/06/2022 22:28

I grew up in a different culture so never drank tea as a child. I give my dc milky tea occasionally, no sugar though, and never late in the day. They see it as a proper treat. (Moreso if they get a biscuit to dunk, obviously)

RhinestoneCowgirl · 11/06/2022 22:29

Also late 70s child, milky tea from about age 5, used to have sugar in it too. Mum was working class but married up 😉

DingleyDel · 11/06/2022 22:29

My gps gave me sweet milky tea when we went to stay in the 90s. It was divine! I remember my uncle giving his toddlers tea in a bottle and that was in the 2000’s! My family were solidly middle class by that point. Well paid professional jobs all round.

MarmiteCoriander · 11/06/2022 22:29

NO! I was born 1978 and don't remember having tea to drink at all.

I do remember drinking on one occassion, my estranged nans coffee, about age 3 and being wired ALL day. It wasn't a milky coffee- it was HER coffee and I was allowed to drink it. I was also given an entire bounty, coconut chocolate bar and had diarrhoea for 2 days. I still remember the whole event, but never had milky tea and didnt drank coffee again till I was much older.

Notoironing · 11/06/2022 22:29

I remember my mum used to bring me a bottle of tea at school pick up! I did start school early though so I was probably almost 4.
I also remember deciding to wean myself off having sugar in my tea once I was a bit older.
this was in the 80s. Yes white working class parents, not well off but aspiring to better things and hardworking

Cameleongirl · 11/06/2022 22:30

No, I was given milk or water. But I’ve seen toddlers being given milky tea in a bottle.

SlowHorses · 11/06/2022 22:31

Yes, drank tea from an early age (not from bottle and no sugar). Loads of it! Northern working class ‘done good’ family also.

DockOTheBay · 11/06/2022 22:32

No never. I think its absolutely bizarre to give a baby a bottle of sweet tea. Just give them milk, why do they need added caffeine and sugar.

whattodo2019 · 11/06/2022 22:32

I was born mid 70's and was never given tea. Why the hell would you give a baby/ toddler or child tea??? It's full of caffeine?????

demotedreally · 11/06/2022 22:32

Yes and my children do now. We are not working class.

TheChosenTwo · 11/06/2022 22:33

No, never! I still don’t like or drink tea or coffee.
Never gave my dc tea either.
Water or milk until they were really quite big!

ChandlersDad · 11/06/2022 22:35

Northern working class done good = always drank tea from a bottle and then mug. No sugar though.

SlowHorses · 11/06/2022 22:35

I should clarify as realise sometimes people think this means “babies”. I had it from age 4-5+.

Longdistance · 11/06/2022 22:36

Yes, tea since I can remember. Coffee in my teens.
My dd1 likes tea, but started drinking it aged 8, still likes tea and cake aged nearly 13. Dd2 isn’t that bothered.

Cameleongirl · 11/06/2022 22:36

My Grandma would order Gold Top milk from the milkman as a treat for the grandchildren at the weekend…thick cream on the top, 😋. We’d also have bacon sandwiches at her house…. Cholesterol awareness wasn’t widespread in our area. 🤣

etulosba · 11/06/2022 22:37

Yes, and so did all the other children I was friends with.

sunlight81 · 11/06/2022 22:38

Northern lower middle class and on occasion I give my 3yo a miniature tea cup of whole milk which has had my tea bag dunked in for a few seconds to make it a bit brown.

He likes to copy mum/dad and join us in an afternoon "brew"!!

BlackTourmaline · 11/06/2022 22:38

Same here and most of my peers too.

CharlotteSt · 11/06/2022 22:38

Never drank tea as a child because I didn't really like it. Felt very hard done by when family would say it was my turn to make it 😠

Started drinking it when I started work and I had to make the morning teas/coffees. Still can't bear coffee.
