Is my jaw dislocated?

Was on a fairground ride, went flying and the side of my face went into my brothers knee. Jaw feels really weird on one side, not hurting when kept still, but just feels not right. I can't fully bite my back teeth down or open my mouth past a certain point, when I try it feels like there's a bubble (don't know how else to describe it) that I can't get past. My teeth also don't seem to line up properly. Does this sound like it's dislocated even though it doesn't really hurt? And if so will it sort itself out or do I need to go to A&E? Thanks.

Hospital asap

user1494050295 · 11/06/2022 20:43

If you can’t eat or drink that is serious. A and e straight away

HollowTalk · 11/06/2022 20:43

I agree, get yourself to the hospital.

@user1494050295 I've managed to sip drinks by kind of opening a cm and tipping it into my mouth. Haven't tried eating but don't think I could chew.

Go to hospital

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 11/06/2022 20:48

Agree hospital, ideally one with maxiofacial unit if you have a choice. If it happens again during office hours a dentist can help. On the way ice might help.

Definitely. definitely hospital.

Matchingcollarandcuffs · 11/06/2022 20:51

Try a straw for fluids. There’s disc in your jaw and it sounds like this may be what you feel as the bubble.

poor you

My jaw joint sometimes "slides out" of the socket and these are exactly the symptoms I have.

A dental hospital can help, so yes I'd go to hospital.

Guy was on 24 hrs in A&E with dislocated jaw. It's surprisingly not that painful, you wouldn't know necessarily, not like a dislocated knee or shoulder. It wasn't that painful to put back either, apparently. Sorry, it's Saturday night and I wouldn't want to go to A&E then, either. I could imagine leaving it until tomorrow, you might not get seen until tomorrow stupid o'clock time, anyway.

I've dislocated my jaw three times and one of the times was exactly like you described, please go to the hospital! It's easily fixed

Something seems to have suddenly clicked back, I was trying to gently move it and now I can open it normally. Still can't bite down properly but that's the only thing. Feels 10x better - I can talk again!
I'm going to monitor it incase it gets bad again but it seems to me that it might have slightly clicked out and I've clicked it back. Thanks for all your advice, was literally getting in the car about to go to A&E when it suddenly shifted

It's still worth getting it looked at and X-rayed, mine had fractured too

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 11/06/2022 21:06

We were generally advised not to leave it because the longer it is out the longer it takes to recover. Now fortunately a heat pack is generally sufficent to relax it enough to slip back in but as this is your first time I really would try to get to hospital. Take a notepad and pen or phone so you can commuicate.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 11/06/2022 21:10

That is good news, IF you decide to leave it until the morning (and you prob should go to a&e still), only have soft food - soup, smoothies, ice cream etc. until you can see a professional. Don't open your mouth wide or chew on anything as it might go out again.
