Best kitten food for low income

I’ve recently brought my kitten home, and he’s three months old. He was fed Whiskers wet food before he came to me, but I’d like him to eat better quality food. I am low income, so I’d like his food to be affordable to me.

Is there anyone on here that is knowledgeable about cats that can give me recommendations please?

I feed him Whiskers poultry pure delight wet food
and Purina Pro Plan Live Clear dried food, at the moment.

Thank you in advance!

He needs to be on the same food as he was eating before while you do the very gradual change over . My cats were adults when I got them with mature stomachs and they took a good 3-4 weeks to take on the changes .

My best move was giving them grainfree biscuit which has improved the aroma of their litter tray

As an aside because I know there will be other posters thinking this but the food is a small % of the upkeep of a cat . We buy Whiskas in pouches of 40 , (about £11 ) they eat 4x daily ( theres 2 of them) plus some biscuit - £5/bag.
I tried them on rawfood from the Vet . they were Hmm . They like a bit of chicken , but tuna gives the female a dodgy tummy .
Then the litter (we use CatsBest 2 huge trays) it is ££ but really effective
My last VetBill for vaccine+ worming tablets and flea drops (6 months worth) was £240
Insurance (mine are common or garden moggies )
Micro Chip £10ish
Neutering ( mine were snipped'n'chipped by CPL they were £80 each)

Catdoor (we have a micro chip activated which meant a new panel in the french door as there was no where else to put it )

They are more ££ than you'd imagine !

Yeah, he’s on a Healthy Pet Club, which will allow him to be vaccinated, microchipped and have flea and worming treatment (monthly) all for “free”. He’ll also have 20% of his neutering operation. Plus free regular check-ups at the vet.

We use Cat’s Best wood fibre litter, it’s very good!

He’s actually the third cat I’ve had, so I know how expensive they can be.😊I just can’t afford the quality of food I’d like to give him, so I want to get the best of what I can afford…

Grain free dry biscuits are a good bet. Thrive are good, high in protein.

I was going to suggest Costco if you have a card/know someone who does but I just looked and the Whiskas is the same price as Sainsbury Hmm
And they often don't have the fish one that our cats like .
It used to be £8ish compared to £10 in supermarket .

sorry I don’t know but if you post in the cat section (the litter tray I think?) they’ll know!

You know there needs to be a photo , right ......................?

I fed this. Have now moved onto the adult version. It’s nutritionally very similar to Canegan at a fraction of the price. Plus whatever wet food my cat will eat on the day (changes frequently).

Check out the Smilla dry kitten food on zooplus. It seems better quality than whiskas etc but there's a 10kg bag of the dry food on there for just £19.99 on there which is way cheaper than whiskas. The bag is massive! Ours eat it fine although we do mix it in with Purina ONE junior for variety.

Otherwise ours are mainly on whiskas pouches for their wet food. We tried a variety of canned kitten food on zooplus but they just prefer the pouches. And bluebottles of course. What can you do haha

Rubyroseyposey · 11/06/2022 21:40

Zooplus is a good site for pet food.

Also if you're looking at zooplus, look at the Greenwoods plant fibre litter. A lot cheaper than cats best but I can't tell the difference between them.
