Is it worth shopping in Aldi?

I previously shopped in Aldi all the time, but then had 2 children in quick sucession and hated going with 2 babies, and no toilet or changing facility.

Started a regular online sainsbury shop, and also separated from husband so food bill dropped a lot. I've noticed prices are increasing and wonder if its worth switching again.

I am on a budget. I work 2 full days and 3 school hour days. DC have activities 3 evenings (my shorter work days)

They go to their dad's Sundays.

My main issue is just not wanting to take the DC shopping, and not wanting to give up 2-3 hours of my child free Sunday to shopping. I know, there are worse problems to have.

It's a30 minute drive to the nearest aldi. I can have my sainsbury delivery and have it put away by 7.30am

I spend around £70 a week on average. 1 adult, 2 DC and a cat.

6 months ago I was spending 45-65 a week. Now it's usually 70 and recently was 95 on one occasion.

The cost in petrol to get there would get rid of any savings you make tbf.

tesco is cheaper than sainsbury’s and price matches tesco. They do delivery too

Price matches Aldi

Can you do a mixture? I buy my weekly shopping online, but go to aldi every 3 weeks (Aprox) to do a big shop of non-fresh especially the stuff that is significantly cheaper in there. Also love a browse round the middle aisle!!

ImFree2doasiwant · 11/06/2022 08:42

I had thought if switching to tesco , the club card points are more useful than sainsbury. That might be the way to go.

Do click and collect from Aldi

JS87 · 11/06/2022 08:47

Get Asda deliveries. They are cheaper than Tesco too.

DoNutSweatTheSmallStuff · 11/06/2022 09:05

I would switch to Aldi.
I really do find it about a third cheaper than the likes of Tesco and Sainsburys.
I wish we'd switched years ago.

ChiselandBits · 11/06/2022 09:18

Aldi is hit and miss. Berries and "exotic fruit" is much cheaper but normal fruit and veg I find goes off way too fast, plus you can't get loose veg and I don't want a whole bag or carrots or potatoes in one go. I can rarely get a whole shop in my local Aldi - if I try, I always end up in Tesco and probably end up spending more in total. As others have said, with the cost of fuel, a 30 min drive cancels out any advantage in price and I'm 100% with you on the not wasting kid free time on stuff like that. Agree with others that Tesco click and collect or delivery is the way to go.

Oblomov22 · 11/06/2022 09:45

I go to Aldi to get some bits. Then walk to ssinsburys to get the rest. I can't get everything I need in only one shop.

NashvilleQueen · 11/06/2022 09:57

Sainsburys is more expensive than Fortnums.

Ocado is cheaper than sainsburys and Waitrose is about the same.

Tesco, Morrisons and Asda all better vfm overall than aldi in my view. There are many savings to be had in aldi but the quality is patchy and they don't have the range.

If you have Amazon prime Morrisons deliver the same day (in some areas at least) so you don't pay an extra delivery charge in a £40+ shop

Sniffypete · 11/06/2022 10:00

Do any Aldi's near you do click and collect? It's a fiver extra but still works out less than Sainsburys even with their Aldi's price match!

balletmuffin · 11/06/2022 10:06

I would try Tesco. We use them and have a delivery saver. They often price match Aldi. I do like some things from Aldi and do get a few bits IF I am passing but like you it’s a 30 minute drive away from me. I don’t rate Aldi’s shelf life for their fruit and veg and the family don’t like Tesco equivalents from Aldi, Greek yoghurt being one.

AlternativePerspective · 11/06/2022 10:13

It depends what you’re buying, but I went to Aldi forthe first time recently and it only cost me about £4 less than it would have to do the same shop in sainsburys. And as I don’t drive any savings would be absorbed in taxi costs.

Sainsburys and tesco aren’t actually that different from each other, although I know that people say they are. For a while I would do two identacle shopping lists online. One with sainsburys and one with tesco, and whichever came out cheaper I would order. And there was very little in it tbh.

The saving comes from branded and non branded products.

Branding is very powerful, and very expensive. E.g. this week I have bought sainsburys own mayo and ketchup, and some other non branded brown sauce, and collectively they have cost me less than one of the individual products would have.

Reduce the number of branded products you buy and you will bring down your grocery costs.

SophSoSo · 11/06/2022 10:14

I would use Tesco, Aldi has increased a lot recently and I can’t get everything I need.

The Clubcard prices make a difference and I think if you sign up and pay something like £7 a month you get 10% off two shops a month too.

Nutellaspoon · 11/06/2022 10:15

No, I find if I shop in Aldi I then have to go elsewhere for other things and you can never plan a shop because what was in last week might not be in again for 2-3 weeks. The way I save most money is meal planning and sticking to it on an online shop.

wibblewobbleball · 11/06/2022 10:20

My Aldi is a drive away too. I do a monthly click and collect shop there for meat (I freeze in portions), frozen stuff, tinned food, pasta, rice, cleaning stuff etc to last us the month plus all the fresh stuff for the week. Worth the petrol and the £5 click and collect charge (I would spend this on something random I saw in any shop if I went in person!). Then I only need to do a top up shop each week for fresh fruit, veg and dairy. I tend to pick up any yellow sticker items when I do a top up shop and chuck them in the freezer too. I find this has helped me stay within my original budget despite the food and fuel price increases.

BiscoffSundae · 11/06/2022 10:37

Not for me, always hear people raving about it but unless you have one in walking distance I wouldn’t bother, I don’t drive and my “local” one is two buses away, wouldn’t be worth it for me. I shop online anyway.

maddiemookins16mum · 11/06/2022 10:49

I’m lucky to have an Aldi 5 mins drive away and have been there every Saturday at 8am for the last 4 months. Before that I had an Asda home delivery. We are two adults and two cats and I get everything (including household cleaning stuff, toileteries, cat food, loo rolls etc) from there now. My weekly bill ranges from £45-£60.00 all in. Today it was £52.67 for an entire week of meals (including breakfast/lunch/snacks/drinks), also two boxes of cat food, fairy liquid, shampoo/conditioner and some after sun. The food included fresh chicken, pork steaks, plenty of veg/salad and other store cupboard items. I will not need to do any sort of top up shop. It’s saving me about £50.00 a month compared to Asda.

randomsabreuse · 11/06/2022 11:01

Not worth a 30 minute drive. I like Aldi but only go when more or less passing anyway. I have a Lidl in walking distance which I use in preference to Sainsbury's or Tesco (also in my town).

BarbaraofSeville · 11/06/2022 12:28

I wouldn't spend an hour on a round trip to aldi. Is there a lidl or asda closer? Or you could stock up on anything that will last on a once a month trip.

Remember that you don't have to use the same shop each time and if you rotate round online shopping, sometimes you get sent vouchers to tempt you back to one you haven't used for a while.

AdmiralsPie · 11/06/2022 12:36

I love Aldi but I wouldn't give up 2 hours and pay the extra petrol money to go that far. Stick with what you're doing. The difference won't be massive once you've factored in petrol.

VanCleefArpels · 11/06/2022 12:38

I have had Morrisons deliveries for years. I’ve compared my last 3 big shops from Aldi with Morrisons via the app and have had savings of beteeen 15 and 30 per cent. There was nothing on my list that I coukd not get in Aldi. So on that basis yes it’s worth it.

tulips27 · 11/06/2022 12:40

With recent price rises I find the difference is less. I do the same as @Findahouse21 and go in for select things every now and then, and usually buy 2.

Orangesandlemons77 · 11/06/2022 12:44

I actually find I'm saving money using Waitrose delivery and their £20 off £100 codes...and buying lots of their Essentials (basics) range which is good quality and value.

I've got the family shop for 4 (2 adults and 2 teens) down to £80 a week which includes wine / beer now with only topups of bread and milk...
