What age would you let your child watch Jurassic Park?

My 4 1/2 year old loves dinosaurs and sees posters and bits and bobs with Jurassic park on them, he has asked a few times to watch it. I have said no, what do you think? I feel like he has plenty of time to watch 'scary' films as he gets older, my husband thinks he'd probably be okay with it. Ditto Spider-Man and other marvel
Films!

He is 4.5. I think it is too young. It is a bit scary.

Let him watch the cartoon Land before time instead.

He can watch the other films when he is older.

flutterbean · 10/06/2022 23:20

My 6 year old is dinosaur/marvel obsessed.

He watches a lot of lego jurassic world/marvel superheros on youtube kids/disney+ rather than the actual films. They follow the same storylines but obviously lego characters so a lot more child appropriate/less blood.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 10/06/2022 23:21

My dinosaur obsessed ds watched 1 through 3 probably by 4. He wasn't fussed in the slightest because he knew dinosaurs were extinct. His just turned 4 sister has watched at least the original movie and she wasn't bothered either for the same reasons.

I allowed my 4.5 yr old to see it but they don't scare easily. Whenever I jumped I was told "mummy it's not real" 😆

Ohnonevermind · 10/06/2022 23:23

I always use IMDB. They go through violence, nudity/sex language etc in subheadings. I find it really helpful to judge a film

Unihorn · 10/06/2022 23:23

Have you watched Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous on Netflix? It's absolutely perfect for children who are too young for the films. My under 6s love it, although I should preface it by saying there are also people eaten and quite unsettling dinosaur chases in it too.

Of course they're now banging on about wanting to watch the films!

gillyff · 10/06/2022 23:24

I find camp cretaceous scary though

TeaWithFlorence · 10/06/2022 23:24

My dsc watched it when he was 4 and he loved it. He'd watch it over and over. But my own are too young at 6 because they're much more sensitive than he was at that age. So ill be waiting a while longer. So basically. It depends on the child.

Unihorn · 10/06/2022 23:24

I actually think I enjoy Camp Cretaceous more than the kids sometimes.

gillyff · 10/06/2022 23:25

@Unihorn same

Triptop · 10/06/2022 23:25

No, I wouldn't let him, I was thinking about 10 or 11 to watch something like that. I wouldn't allow superhero with violence either.

gillyff · 10/06/2022 23:25

although can't wait to see jurassic world 3

gillyff · 10/06/2022 23:27

Jurassic world 1 is actually pretty tame though, it's nearly 30 yrs old

Bakedpotatoesfortea · 10/06/2022 23:27

I tried watching it with my DC who was 6yo at the time and a total dinosaur lover but freaked them out completely

SunflowerGardens · 10/06/2022 23:31

I actually started a thread on this once and the general consensus was that the Jurassic park films are family friendly. But I watched Jurassic Park when it was released I was 7 and I remember being very worried that dinosaurs were actually going to come back and run free around the world (there was lots of talk in the news at this time about the possibility of this happening) and I had nightmares about a T Rex chasing me round the playground in school!

That said I suppose kids have to get scared sometimes and learn how to manage those feelings in a safe environment. And I was a sensitive child. But I think the new films are very scary!

sickofthisnonsense · 10/06/2022 23:33

I remember trying to watch the original with my kids and them absolutely freaking out at the opening scene! Never got past that for years and years.
They were older than 4

summermode · 10/06/2022 23:37

I watched the latest Jurassic World today. Good movie but do not recommend for little ones.
Maybe because we watched IMAX and the experience was too vivid, my 8yr DD closes her eyes for some scenes. We watched all the series (except the latest) at home and she quite likes them.

MintyGreenDream · 10/06/2022 23:38

4 or 5

whereareyousleep · 10/06/2022 23:40

There is a Lego Jurassic world film that would be good I think the movies would be too scary my 8 year old only watched them in the last year or so.

DownNative · 10/06/2022 23:42

Jurassic Park (1993) is rated PG in the UK, so a young child is advised to watch with an adult in case some scenes scare them.

I'd say 4+ is fine. A lot of the film is a slow buildup and there's no scary scenes until late ish onwards.

MoonlightMedicine · 10/06/2022 23:42

We use common sense media to guide us but I think my son was around 8.

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 10/06/2022 23:43

Jurassic Park was the first film I ever watched in the cinema aged 4. Only you know if your son can handle the content. Mine saw it around age 5 I think.

Icecreamandapplepie · 10/06/2022 23:46

Between 5 and 7 depending on child

SemperIdem · 10/06/2022 23:47

I was 4 when Jurassic Park came out originally as a PG, my parents went to see it and declined allowing me to watch it until I was 6/7.

I think 4 is a bit young to watch it myself too now I’m a parent.

There are more child friendly dinosaur films/docs about that your child would enjoy. Sadly they don’t have Jeff Goldblun in but I think his appeal is generally lost on children anyway.

Queenoftheashes · 10/06/2022 23:51

I would insist on Jurassic park from birth. That’s said, I saw Jurassic park aged 8 and still have nightmares. but I’d do it again My brother was four and fine.
