Ah how amazing! Wimbledon is just magical.

You could stay locally and walk or the grounds are walkable from the tube in Southfields. Also worth looking at West London like Kensington, Hammersmith, Putney areas maybe. If you stay there, you’d have more options for going out. You have a lot of location you could stay in and Uber won’t too expensive. Sometimes the District line, which is the tube you will need, had a lot of work at the weekend so might not be operating.

Also worth knowing that they don’t check bags going in, or at least they didn’t last year with Covid so we were able to bring in little cans of gin and lunch! Pleased to report the strawberries and cream has stayed the same price for decades there.

MegCleary · 10/06/2022 20:37

So the district line is what we need to be near??

Yeah that’s what I’d do.

Unless it's a complete emergency I doubt they'd have engineering works on the district line during Wimbledon so you should be fine using that line.

My bag was checked last year and in normal years everyone's bags are checked, though sometimes it's not very thorough (unless you are in the queue and then your bags go through an airport style scanner) . Unless they change things this year (and can't see why they would, rules have been the same for a few years now), you're allowed to bring in food and alcohol. This is how much alcohol you're allowed:

. Alcohol may be brought into the Grounds but is limited to the equivalent of one bottle of wine or Champagne (750ml) or two cans of beer (500ml) or two cans of premixed aperitifs per person. Bottles of spirits or fortified wines will not be allowed into the Grounds.

You can't take anything hard sided so no picnic hampers or coolboxes. Strawberries and cream has been £2.50 for several years. Every year I expect it to have increased and every year it's £2.50.

This is all brilliant info, especially the wine info…
as for the strawberry price wow!!!
Where’s good to stay!! We need 2 nights. Am tempted by central London 😜

If you are all dressed up in heels it's probably easiest to get train to Wimbledon (from Waterloo) then to use special bus to outside the tennis.

Else take tube and get out at at Wimbledon Park or Southfields and walk 10 mins or so.

Stay somewhere on the District Line (Earl's Court area has cheap-ish hotels and B&Bs, tho some will be booked up by now).
Accommodation in Wimbledon or Southfields (ie walking distance) will have booked up months ago.
London hotel prices have shot up this year, so brace yourselves & be prepared to share a room.
Be aware, there are rumours of another Tube strike that weekend!

Plan to arrive at the club when gates open @ 10.30am. This means you can have a wander round, see finalists practice, and also watch some veterans/juniors/wheelchair matches on outside courts - they are all fab, & often more fun than the singles final.

Stay for the ladies' doubles final, so be prepared for a 10 or 12 hour day, & pace yourselves accordingly.

Don't wear heels! You will need comfy shoes, as you will want to walk around the grounds, & it is a lovely 10 minute walk up from Southfields Tube.
Come prepared for any weather - def a hat.
Bring an empty water bottle - there are lots of drinking water taps to fill up from in the grounds.
Have credit/debit cards as Wimbledon now cash-free.

Don't forget your photo ID to go with the e-tickets on your phone.
Enjoy!

I like the Putney Bridge premier inn for location. Though obviously you might want somewhere more luxurious. Two stops on the district line or you can walk up to the common for a bus. Lots of options for dinner after.

CarburyChocolateRules · 11/06/2022 14:21

You need Southfields station for the Tennis and it will 100% be working
They dont do tube works during the tennis.
Southfields is on the District line

Leave lots and lots of time that morning.
Southfields will be mad busy
Don't get a black cab at Southfields, theres really no need, just walk in the direction that everyone is walking

As for going out, depends what you want and depends wheee you stay.
Southfields hasnt got a hotel but they do air b&b’s, but not sure anything will be available now
Theres a premier inn in Putney, near the River Thames and about a 20 minute bus journey away from the Tennis courts.
The bus number you will need from Putney to Southfields is ‘39’
Theres afew places to eat and drink in Putney but if your in London as a treat then dont waste it on staying in Putney
You can also get a tube from Putney to Southfields and a tube to Embankment, which is all on the same line, that will take you into ‘London, Near Trafalgar square / Covent Garden etc.

I guess it depends where you are staying to the advice people can give you, but book up as soon as you can.
Wimbledon is a huge event

Hbh17 · 11/06/2022 14:26

To be fair, lots of us tennis fans book our accommodation 12 months in advance, so I would be surprised if Premier Inn Putney has any capacity now.
A friend of mine was quoted £800 for 2 nights at a pub in Wimbledon Village for finals weekend (the quote was last week).
AirBnB may be worth a try.
