Which job role to Choose (@crossroads in life! )

No one to discuss with, I am
Over 50 and finding my nurse role getting
increasingly exhausting, been there for over 15 years, in a bit of rut and looking for different ventures.
Offered some job offers;
Would you do take a lesser paid role than current job, role is working fully from home doing
a slightly bump down role with less stress, not physically challenging.
second job offer- commute under an hour into London each way for double the pay of first job offer, albeit a substantial percentage of the increase will be taking up by Train fares.

A - reduced money for quite life and WFH or

B- go for it within the bright lights, love the bustle of London but endure the stress of commuting.
Will appreciate opinions please.

Any thoughts at all…
thanks

I was in a similar position, albeit I'm older than you. I tried the higher paid job ( not in London) with a longer commute but the job wasn't what it was sold to me as. I'm now starting next week a job with fewer hours, half the commute and a choice of hybrid working later on. I didn't want to be fully wfh as I'd find that isolating.

I’d probably go for A. What’s your pension like though? Do you need to consider the pension as well?

Thank you Ilove JudgeJudy, yes
I am concerned about the isolation that comes with fully wfh, but I lean towards being an introvert..

FrownedUpon, thank you, I will look at Pension status in A, it’s a private organisation

Have to be honest it fully depends on the role- are they similar or very different?

girlmom21 · 10/06/2022 14:14

I'd go for A if it's enough pay for you to live comfortably.

pocoyo1 · 10/06/2022 14:28

Quite different..
A is a ‘step down’ from my current role, potential loss of some skills if practiced long term, this comes with weekend working also.

B - is same role as my current role with bit more money if commute into London, I could stay in current role but feels quite demoralised there.

Thanks girlmom21

I would go with A, as a fellow introvert. Personally I'd love the idea of B but know I'd hate it in reality. I love love love London, but imagine the commute in January, when it's pishing down and cold and the train is cancelled...

I gave up my teaching job to be a SAHM for a while and it's doing wonders for my MH being home more. I actually get to cook and craft more as I'm not sitting in my car for hours (and all that work business but the commute never helped!)

KurriKawari · 10/06/2022 14:54

I love London but once I had to start commuting there and constant travel issues, i began to dislike it.
With job A do they have a base/office at all that you can pop into on some days? Culture of regular in person meetings or coffee catch ups?

Madmog · 10/06/2022 14:59

Putting aside the cons of both, which job would you prefer?

Either way, the fact you have two job offers proves your very employable, so if whichever job/situation doesn't work out, it won't have to be forever.

resuwen · 10/06/2022 15:05

It completely depends what you are looking for from life right now - are you knackered and wanting the pace of life to step back a gear (job a) or bored and ready for a challenge (job b).

pocoyo1 · 10/06/2022 15:15

I like the concept of WFH as an introvert and yes not keen on the dreary winter travel and commuting, on the other hand still wants to prove to myself I can be up for B
however I have huge reservations regarding commute into London daily and back, I think I am rescinding on B

But have reservation about weekend working with A having worked Monday to Friday while career.

Whole career..

Mmm it's a tricky one TBH. I think if you're finding your current role exhausting and B is similar with the added stress of a commute it may not be the best option.

The only way you know is to give it a try! I recently changed roles/increased hours and it was just too much so have dropped down again.
