I can't believe it's not 'butter' value

So sorry for the terrible title, it just popped into my head.

On a serious note, this relates to the cost of food. As I was doing my shopping today, I noticed that 500g of Countrylife butter is £4.15! We like this brand, it's not even particularly a high end butter but I decided to choose a cheaper one.
Then I thought about this in terms of somebody's wage. For someone who is on the national working wage, a £4.15 tub of butter is nearly the equivalent of half an hours work!
It's just crazy.

I'm interested to know what changes people have made to their shopping or maybe even diet in line with the cost of living?

In our family, we've definitely felt the pinch with the price of formula milk but luckily dd is nearly one so we'll be switching completely soon.

I don't know where you shop but I got 750g from Tesco for £4.00 yesterday, but yes, prices are going crazy.

branded goods are always crazy prices. just buy unbranded (probably people on a minimum wage always do!). It's not usually not a lot different.

Yes, I was only thinking about spreadable butter yesterday when doing my online shop. You used to be able to pick up a 500g tub on offer for £2.00 not so long ago. Now it's getting on for a fiver so I'll definitely be switching to something cheaper.

BlancmanegeBunny · 09/06/2022 19:02

500g of country life is £2.75 in Asda, the larger 750g tub is £4.00

As a family we don't use much butter but when we do it has to be 100% butter. The spreadable kinds of butter are only 50% butter, 25% is oil and the rest is water and salt.

Ingredients
Butter (50%), Rapeseed Oil (25%), Water, Salt

BlancmanegeBunny · 09/06/2022 19:04

OOps that info was outof date..............500g is £3.45 and 750g is £4.95

I shouldn't trust Google!"!!!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/06/2022 19:09

A pack of butter is £1.90 now it’s scary. I’ve told my family we will have to go to a spread variety. Maybe not if its that expensive.

Baystard · 09/06/2022 19:18

You'd be cheaper buying real butter OP and it would be better for you - 500g of 100% real butter is only £3.50 - £4 depending on which brand.

Galliano · 09/06/2022 19:48

Country life spreadable butter is bizarrely cheap in home bargains. It was £2.45 when I last bought it, admittedly a few weeks ago. I deliberately wait until I’m on a retail park with a home bargains to buy butter because I can’t bear to pay supermarket price for it.

whatsthestory123 · 09/06/2022 20:39
