So sick of hay fever

Anyone else just hate summer because of hay fever? I’m so sick of it, today has been awful. I don’t get to enjoy summer. I’ve tried the over the counter stuff but nothing works, has anyone found something that actually works?

I feel your pain. It drives me up the bloody wall. I now take a double dose desloratadin (on prescription) and have a nasal steroid spray.

Hi, I get really bad grass pollen hayfever, this is what I have found that works:

Hayfever eye drops (Optrex or similar) taken 2-3 times a day

Plus

Beconase Nose spray: takes time to build up so for grass pollen season (June) start using it in mid May.

Plus

Antihistamines. I have tried prescription ones (fexofenadine 180mg) but the over counter ones are just as good. I was told for severe hayfever I could take more than one a day but check with your own pharmacist/doctor.

Optional extra:
I also tried one of those arm bands with the bead to press an acupressure point near the inner elbow and that also helped.

I also have to avoid touching grass pollens or long grass, or I come up in wheals

I feel for you. I suffered terribly in my teens and 20s but then grew out of it but DH and my 3 adult dcs all have it really bad. They take a variety of over the counter stuff - often popping 3-4 of the one a day pills on a daily basis - which I find quite worrying. One dc did get something on prescription a couple of years ago which he said worked well. I can't remember what it was but maybe have a word with your gp? He also regularly flushes his nostrils with water which he says helps.

Same as @BEAM123 but also do all the obvious preventatives such as wear sunglasses when outside, wash hands and face and ideally change clothes when coming in from outside, don't dry bedding on the line and if thundery weather stay indoors .
I had terrible hay fever until my late 20s when we moved across the country to an area with very different fauna and less pollution. It made a huge difference by giving me a bit of a break from all the pollens that had been irritating me for all those years. We moved back after 5 years but I have never been as bad again.

It's really important with hay fever to be consistent with it and ideally to start before one's symptoms badly flare up.Just taking things higgledy piggledy , particularly the nose spray and eye drops doesn't work.

FrankGrillosFloof · 09/06/2022 12:32

Fexofenadine - used to be prescription only but is now available OTC. I stocked up from Amazon. Recommended dose is 1 tab per day but doc told me you can double up if still getting symptoms.

Also an air purifier for home. I bought one for another reason but found it’s really helped my hayfever when at home.

I suffer terribly from hayfever. I never had a problem until my mid 20s. I don't know how one can just develop an allergy. Some days I feel like plucking my eyeballs out. Antihistamines don't help. My colleague said something about a hayfever jab that has relieved her symptoms and I'm gonna ask my GP about that.

BiscoffSundae · 09/06/2022 12:50

I’m the same I never got hay fever until my 20s people don’t realise how bad it is unless they get it. Thanks for all the tips off to order some Fexofenadine!

I've been using fexofenadine for the first time and it is helping. The hay fever is not quite a severe as it usually would be. I've only ever taken one tablet a day so maybe I'll try two tablets.

I never had any hay fever at all until I was pregnant for the first time at 27. I've had it bad every year since.

So many of my friends have beautiful gardens and love gardening and being outside in the evening, but I have a plain patch of grass which DH mows and an overgrown hedge. I struggle even to walk the dog this time of year. I really dislike these few months.

mariebaby3 · 09/06/2022 20:42

I agree with a pp… I’ve suffered for years and finally have it under control with fexofenadine, optrex hayfever drops and beconase nasal spray. all three together are miracle workers!

timtam23 · 09/06/2022 20:47

My DS has hayfever which usually improves with over the counter antihistamines, but this year he was really struggling with the symptoms so the GP prescribed fexofenadine for him - it's definitely helped. A friend also highly recommended Sterimar saline nasal spray so I bought that for him too and he says it really helps his nose to feel less blocked

SaintVal · 09/06/2022 20:51

Fexofenadine and mometasone nasal spray sorts me out. L
