Plastering and radiators

Just wondering if anyone can help me with this- currently having the living room plastered, the plasterer has plastered around the radiators rather than take them off to plaster underneath.
when you had plastering done did you take the radiators off for the plasterer to plaster under it or did the plasterer remove them for you and plaster underneath?

We had the radiators taken off but this is a job for a plumber not a plasterer.

i see, that’s what I’m thinking. I’m sure when we had our old house plastered years ago the radiators were taken off. I suppose I just thought that is what would happen this time but it hasn’t. Now Im embarrassed to ask him about it as he’s already plastered around them! 😱

I agree a plasterer is very unlikely to take them off but a decent one is likely to get a plumber to come and take them off, then come back to
put them back on.

Herbyhippo · 08/06/2022 21:16

Surely he should have asked. Do people really want plasterers to plaster around objects? I don’t think I have ever seen this before.

I think you should mention it, why didn’t he ask or tell you to remove them?

Flipflopblowout · 08/06/2022 21:17

Speak to the plasterer, tell him that there has been a misunderstanding and you thought that he would arrange for the rads to be removed and replaced. You will now arrange that and you want him to return to finish the job.

purpledagger · 08/06/2022 21:18

We hired a plasterer who we knew well and he refused to remove the radiators. He told OH that they were easy to remove and told him how to it, but he refused to do it himself, in case something went wrong. We ended up removing them ourselves.

Some tradesfolk have multiple skills so you may have previously been lucky with finding a plasterer who was competent enough to remove your radiators, but I guess most probably don't want the responsibility.

Findingthisdifficult1234 · 08/06/2022 21:18

I know what a mess! I’ll have to ask him about it tomorrow! I’ll have to get hold of a plumber now.

I feel like I wish I could just be pleased with what he has done but it bothers me as I can see behind the radiator and it looks messy! But then maybe I am just being fussy!
so no one on here has had a plasterer plaster around the radiators? I feel so stupid now haha!

Plasterer in at the moment, he took the radiator off.

HorribleHerstory · 08/06/2022 21:27

I remove my own radiators for decorating. Is it the same process for plastering? Mine are the usual gas central heating white bar grill types attached quite low down? It’s a good time to do it as you won’t need to run the central heating. You turn the valve off, really tight, put the standard cap back on it you use a temperature one, then you can unscrew the cap nut, drain it a little bit and lift it off, ready to put on after. There’s usually a bit of water swilling around but we just lay ours flat next to where they go to decorate behind. Did it yesterday to paint a bedroom.

Findingthisdifficult1234 · 08/06/2022 21:27

Yes it definitely makes more sense to take them off. He’s meant to be finishing tomorrow or Friday and now I’ve got to ask him about radiators! Palava!! Hate having to say I’m not happy with something! But it’s costing a lot to have done and I feel disappointed with it already.

Horribleherstory I’ll show my husband what you’ve written. We’re awful with DIY things though, will probably go wrong if we try to do it!

Don't worry op you're not on your own. I've had plastering done around radiators as they refused to take them off. To be fair though in hindsight he wasn't a great plasterer, however it doesn't bother me and I don't notice it.

Findingthisdifficult1234 · 08/06/2022 21:35

Blughbablugh ahh I’m glad I’m not the only one!
I really want to ignore it as hate calling people up on things! But It just bothers me! I wish it didn’t. If I hadn’t had the old house plastered I wouldn’t have even known! And the rest of the room looks lovely.
I’ll have to see how the conversation goes in the morning! I think I’ve left it too late to ask really.

We're having plastering done right now and we took the radiators down ourselves. As others have said it's a job for a plumber (or you - we watched YouTube videos to teach us how to do it). Maybe mention it to the plasterer now? Better than than leaving it, although it depends if you think you'd ever replace the radiator for a different shape, ie a vertical one?

Findingthisdifficult1234 · 09/06/2022 05:36

I didn’t think about that actually mummabubs! We do need a new heating system too, and the vertical ones do seem popular now
