Electric scooter/moped

Unleaded petrol at my local supermarket has just gone up by 8p overnight and there is talk the price will reach £2 a litre this year.

It's got me thinking about my commute to work (6 miles on mainly 40-50mph roads).

Does anyone have an electric moped and if so, please tell me what make/model, costs, recommendations please.

Most I've seen have a max speed of 30mph. Will cars just overtake me if I'm driving at a lower speed?

I passed my car driving test in 1995 so I understand I can ride one on my license but I'd plan to do my CBT.

I had a brief look last year and struggled to find a definitive answer. I thought I’d be able to ride a certain cc equivalent on my license but all the sales brochures said not unless it was an electric assisted bike. Following for better answers!

Petrol lasts an absolute age in mopeds anyway.

I had one as a 16-18 yr old pre getting my driving licence so just had a provisional and my CBT. It had a speed limiter to 30mph because of that. If you have a full driving licence you wouldnt need the limiter and L plate.

Practically, yes they are cheap as chips to run, insure and tax. Cars just overtake if you're going too slow for the . It's bloody cold in the winter so if you do do it make sure you get the big thick gloves, a decent coat, and a snood.

They are very easy to drive, but I have shit balance so did fall a few times.

Anyone know the difference in insurance costs between an electric and a petrol moped?

Bit late response, but on full UK driving licence you can ride a 50cc moped without a CBT I believe. Do the CBT every 2 years and you can ride a 125cc scooter. I've got a Vespa 125, cost £13 to fill it with petrol and lasts me approx 150 miles. Max speed on downhill 65mph, uphill 50 mph. £10 a month insurance, £20 a year Tax, I've paid it off now, but bought from new cost me £100 a month for 3 years to purchase it.
