Where Gap year?

Dd is 17 and announced she’d like a gap year before college, well ok then. Apart from terrifying me, re money, her safety, and how much I’ll miss her, I have no idea how to start looking at what is available. She’d love to study Korean or Chinese and work in film. Girl can dream, but maybe it’s possible??? If not, is there anything she could do volunteer wise, ideally a bit arty and a bit foreign. And I can visit! Thank you

With the greatest respect, surely this is something that she needs to be investigating. She needs to be really motivated to go off alone at 17 / 18, so she needs to find something she is passionate about (or, of course, something that is 'convenient' in the case of happening to have a relative that lives in Australia or Canada or somewhere she fancies).

There are lots of options, but you need a certain level of confidence, self belief, and initiative to set off alone at 18, and part of that surely has to be doing some investigating for yourself?

I agree with pp. This is something that she needs to be driving. If she is leaving it up to you then she's going to mess up that year and feel even worse after. All her ideas sound like stuff she just heard or saw somewhere. Has she come up with any ideas of what this all entails?

Totally agree with @Kite22
If my 17yo couldn’t come up with a plan, I wouldn’t think they were mature enough to go.

What does “work in film” even mean?
Except for, I suppose, just sounding cool.

As per PPs, this is something she needs to be thinking about, researching and actioning. I work in TV rather than film but it is one of the most competitive industries out there, especially at entry level. I can have 100+ CVs in my inbox within minutes of placing an ad for a Runner/ Production Assistant - anyone relying on their parents to make it happen won't even reach the first hurdle.

Thanks everyone. I think things will firm up, she’s pretty sussed, tho not sure how realistic working in the Korean film industry is!
