DH pay rise what happens with child benefit?

DH has been given a pay rise taking him from £50k to £52k per year. Delighted for him as it’s on merit as he is ace. But what do we do about child benefit? Any advice appreciated.

They will automatically write to you requesting you pay back anything that you owe.
Still claim it as it goes towards NI contributions but you’ll just have to pay some back. On 52k I doubt you’ll have to pay it all back but I’m not certain.

I think you lose £100 a year for every £1000 over £50k

You can call them
and tell them or he can fill out a self assessment form

You fill in a self assessment tax form including various deductions (so if you pay into a pension for example) and it tells you how much to repay.

He'll have to fill in a self assessment tax form after next April, so once his p60 is issued.

It's for salary after pension deductions, so if he's making more than 2k of pension deductions a year he won't need to pay anything back.

As long as his pension deduction is 2k or more it is fine,

dementedpixie · 07/06/2022 15:40

They will not automatically write to you

He needs to register for self assessment and do a tax return to say you claim CB. You pay back 10% of every £1k over £50k so that when you reach £60k it would all be paid back.

I think he could also increase pension contributions to take his income back under £50k too.

Do people get child benefit on a £50k salary? DH and I earn £46k between us and we've not had a bean since I went back to work after maternity leave.

Did you apply? Its until the highest earner (not total income) reaches 50k, then tapers off to nothing at 60k. Nothing to do with other benefit like Universal Credit.

You should be getting it. You can apply for it immediately after the baby is born. Did you do that?

Zippidy123 · 07/06/2022 16:15

Aroundtheworldin80moves are we talking about the £80 per month child benefit? We get that but I thought everyone did regardless of income. We applied when DS was born and we did get some extra benefits (working tax credit maybe?) while I was on maternity leave but nothing since then.

Hugasauras · 07/06/2022 16:16

If one of you earns over £50k you have to pay it back on a sliding scale up till £60k IIRC when you have to pay it all back.

LemonySippet · 07/06/2022 16:16

You'll probably still receive it on 52k because it's calculated after benefits. We carried on claiming to ensure my NI contributions but put it in a separate savings account in case it needed to be paid back when DH did his self assessment (it didn't).

Paq · 07/06/2022 16:44

I'm on £55k but my pension deductions mean that I m still (just) under the threshold. If I get an increase this year then it might change.

Same for me - it's definitely worth increasing pension contributions if you are just over the threadhold

Yes, child benefit is the 80 odd quid a month. Everyone does get it, but once once person earns over 50k there's a sliding scale until you're no longer entitled.
