Petrol Prices

TwinklingFairyLights · 07/06/2022 13:34

For the first time ever, I'm having to think about condensing journeys. So instead of popping to the supermarket on a Tuesday and Gym on a Wednesday, I'm combining them in to one trip. Petrol is just extortionate.

Yes 11p.

That’s terrible.

do you have a union? That’s definitely something that needs negotiating!

TheSummerPalace · 07/06/2022 17:33

We have just been to Greece for 2 weeks. A litre of 95 unleaded petrol was €2.26 - it’s about £1=€1.

It was €1.34 in Malta.

Yes 11p.

That isn't even covering the cost of petrol, never mind business insurance, wear and tear. I was getting 45p a Mike 8 years ago. In a non unionised environment.

AntikytheraMech · 07/06/2022 20:43

Even if you only get 11 or 12p a mile from work, you can still submit a claim to HMRC based on the first 10,000 miles at £0.45 and then subsequently at £0.25 and get tax relief on the rest. It's not that complicated.

TwinklingFairyLights · 07/06/2022 20:48

£1.859 at my local garage tonight. I usually fill up at Asda, where it was still £1.799 on Saturday.

I've got a small car too. It cost me £72 to fill it up last week.

Mine used to be £47- £50 to fill it up. Now it's around £71-£75 depending on which garage I go to

orwellwasright · 07/06/2022 20:54

Just think ... It could have been 5p more. Anyone else think that govt promise to reduce duty didn't actually get passed on?

I'm pretty sure my local garage is just pocketing the 5p, that's why I don't fill up there anymore. And don't buy bits like snacks, milk etc while I'm buying petrol.

170.7 at Morrisons today

Alexandra2001 · 07/06/2022 22:16

Don't understand why the Govt isn't looking at price controls/more legally enforceable duty reductions/cuts in VAT?

If they don't get a grip on energy costs, it will have a huge impact on food inflation and consumer spending.

5p when fuel is £2 per litre is rather meaningless, Sunak is making far more on the higher prices inc on gas and electricity prices.

That is 'cheap'. morrisons near me jumped from 1.71 to 1.76 overnight. tesco nearby @ 1.78 and 2 x Shell about 1 mile apart are 1.83 and 1.88

TooMuchBoozeTooManyBoos · 08/06/2022 09:59

It's going to hit £2 a litre soon - almost £1 of which is duty/tax, which is a 25% uplift on the duty/tax taken before the pandemic.

By my maths, that means the treasury could afford to cut duty by at least 24p and still not be taking in any less money than they were before.

TooMuchBoozeTooManyBoos · 08/06/2022 09:59

Sorry, 19p (it's a 24.x% uplift)

Exactly.

If only more people responded as you are planning to do, and use less fuel, perhaps some of the increases might not happen. Even 1p less per litre soon adds up.

TheFormidableMrsC · 08/06/2022 12:29

I've stopped using my car unless it's completely unavoidable (such as visiting my elderly dad an hour away or grocery shopping). DS and I have always had driving trips during the summer hols and I'm going to have to rethink that. I use my bike or walk as much as possible. I have a tiny little Peugeot 107 that is usually so cheap to run, cost £35 to fill and that has now almost doubled. I can't afford it. Low income single parent . It's all awful.

HopingForMyRainbowBaby · 08/06/2022 12:31

The garage (esso) where I live is £190.9 for petrol and £194.9 for diesel that's increased by 5p a litre for diesel since Sunday night! Fecking ridiculous!!

Bighairydogs · 08/06/2022 12:34

I drive about 200 miles a week for work - it’s costing me a fortune. It’s so shit. And if one more person says to me ‘get an electric car’ I will punch them. If I can’t afford £100 for a tank of diesel then I certainly can’t afford a new car. Idiots.

It's nuts. My 1.2 Polo is supposed to be economical. It was economical until the end of last year when petrol started shooting up.

DH has come home tonight and said car is for our work, trips already planned and absolute essentials which will be emergency health care and my elderly Mum. Have to say I agree with this for us. Two full tanks a month is no longer going to happen.

whenwillthemadnessend · 09/06/2022 11:51

At my work we are in minimum wage and I'm basically paying nearly n hour wage a day jus to get here.

Businesses are going to struggle to recruit soon if any commuting is required!

Alexandra2001 · 09/06/2022 15:28

Bojo still waffling on about the 5p cut in duty, he just doesn't get the scale of the problem and Labour appear to have said SFA on the issue :(

Its an open goal Starmer! Lets hear you say a 30p cut backed by emergency law to enforce it?

imho Supermarkets are now using fuel to maintain profits given they are under increasing pressure to keep food prices down.
