TV shows to watch with 9 year old

Hi,

9 year old has recently started going to bed later and wanting to hang out with us in the evening. That's fine, we've been doing board games and puzzles and things, but sometimes in the evening I just want to zone out in front of the TV. Looking for ideas of things to watch that we'll both like. So far we've watched a couple of David Attenborough things, and some of the history stuff about the Queen that has been on. That's been fine, but I'd like to watch something funny maybe. I thought about the Vicar of Dibley, Blackadder, but they're probably just a touch too old for him. Any other ideas? We have a max of an hour at a time to watch something, once or twice a week.

Thanks!

I think it depends on the kid. My 9y/o loves comedies like the IT Crowd (although every episode is not suitable, so some episodes need pre-screening), Mighty Boosh (again needs pre-screening for some episodes but others are pretty ok)... Ghosts on BBC is great and family friendly. We are not too strict and as my kid is quite mature if something inappropriate comes on I tend to just turn off or move to another episode.

My DD loves Ghosts, but there is one backstory that is slightly inappropriate

Other "adult" stuff they like is the bake-off, sewing bee etc type competitions, Mythbusters, Guy Martin, top gear sort of stuff.

Or just being let loose on Disney plus

Junior bake off. Britain's got talent. Deadly 60

Ghosts I've not heard of, I'll look it up.

He's quite a young 9, still very childish in many ways, so don't want to expose him to things he'll be uncomfortable with or not understand.

Mythbusters might be good.

Ghosts is great. My two (6&8) have just got into doctor who in a big way. They love the US Office and Friends if they're on too.

GallopingGreen · 07/06/2022 11:31

We have enjoyed watching family shows together like When Calls The Heart and Chesapeake Shores. Great storylines, no sex and no bad language! All positive and everything works out in the end.
All on Netflix.

JohannSebastianBach · 07/06/2022 11:33

Ghosts is brilliant

ItsMutinyontheBunty · 07/06/2022 11:33

DD (9) and I liked watching Taskmaster bleeped together. It’s hilarious, light hearted and it makes us laugh.

Etinoxaurus · 07/06/2022 11:37

Young Sheldon is charming.

There's a lot of references to porn, strippers, sex work in friends, as well as lots of references to sex within relationships (for example the storyline about monica and chandler ttc, and the storyline about the handcuffs "grandma liked it rough" I think monica says). I wouldn't watch it with my 7 yearold.

Anyway useful thread for me too, as I'd like some comedies to watch with my 7 year old. We've watched documentaries together so far. She also likes how clean is your house type programmes.

So awkward...on cbbc.....dc and I loved it!

crumble82 · 07/06/2022 11:41

Another vote for Ghosts. We’ve also enjoyed ‘A series of unfortunate events’ on Netflix.

ToucanPlayThatGame · 07/06/2022 11:44

Young Sheldon could be good. I think that's the kind of thing I was thinking of. Friends I'm going to leave for a few years, I think.

I'm trying to remember what I watched with my parents at that age. Mostly soaps I think.

Taskmaster is really good.

Mine always liked competition type shows like Portrait artist of the year and Project Runway.

I watched The Cosby Show with mine when they were little but that's probably not appropriate any more.

SavoyCabbage · 07/06/2022 11:47

For comedies

Only Fools and Horses
Fawlty Towers
Fresh of the Boat is really good.

ToucanPlayThatGame · 07/06/2022 11:47

I used to love the Cosby Show! But no, probably not appropriate now.

Can't remember how old I was when I started watching the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

We’ve recently found a PG version of the Taskmaster and my 8yo loves it! He finds it hilarious.

Neoandtrinity · 07/06/2022 11:54

I am a terrible parent according to MN and got my kids their own TV in their bedroom. It only has Netflix kids on it. Around 7pm-8pm I send my kids up to their own room to read/play watch telly if I want to have a bit of peace and quiet in the evenings. They don't really go to sleep until about 9pm.

SallyWD · 07/06/2022 11:56

My 9 year old and 11 year old LOVED Around the World in 80 Days with David Tenant. It was on over Christmas but is still on iplayer. We've just re-watched it! They also love Masterchef (again, loads is series on iplayer) and Dragon's Den.

BlueChampagne · 07/06/2022 12:21

Springwatch!

daisydalrymple · 07/06/2022 12:58

Inside the Tower of London is great, if he’s at all interested in history. Really interesting, and fun, but not at all stuffy.

LuckyAmy1986 · 07/06/2022 13:08

Mine love shows like Four in a bed, come dine with me and My dream Home!

ToucanPlayThatGame · 07/06/2022 13:12

Inside the Tower of London looks perfect!
