Is there a service that does this - moving boxes from one place to another?

I don’t want a proper removal firm, can’t afford that .

DM in hospital, highly unlikely to ever come home - will most likely go straight from hospital into a care home of some sort.

I’ve got two or three weeks to try and pack her house as best I can, and move back to my own house .

I don’t drive so will be getting the bloody train or bus back, so can realistically only manage one (big) suitcase at best plus a backpack and handbag . That’ll be taken up with clothes/essentials .

I think mum’s stuff will go in storage, I’m wary of putting very important stuff into that though eg won’t be able to access it easily .

I’ve got photographs, a few books, school certificates/reports etc, ornaments, cards, jewellery box and childhood things that I don’t want to lose if I can avoid it - I don’t want to have to bin everything I own . I’ve massively reduced things down but still have four cardboard boxes . It’s a 3 hour drive or so - not hugely far .

I’ve looked into student moves, getting massive quotes as postcode is classed as ‘highlands’ (it isn’t) .

I haven’t got any family able to run me back down and not very sure what to do - considering doing it in two runs but that would be expensive (although probably actually work out at roughly the same price) .

Would eg Hermes/parcel force or similar (or whatever company) do it?

Look fir a man with a van service near your mums house.

MsMcGonagall · 06/06/2022 21:10

you can get courier quotes online, put in the box dimensions and weight. Then you can assess whether that price works for you. A courier firm charged me £50 to move a massive heavy box containing an electric drum kit and amplifier across the country, for instance.

Yes, you need a man & van, or possibly a “part move” - where you take some spare space in a removal van doing a larger/longer move.

The 'highland postcode' when it isn't thing is so frustrating. I have pm'd you to see if I am anywhere near and can help.

JuneJubilee · 06/06/2022 21:38

Have you asked friends?

id happily do it for any of my friends, I'd be annoyed if they didn't ask. They might not realise you need help.

other than that, yep 'man with a van' but 3 hours travel, so min 7 hours plus petrol isn't going to be cheap.

Use this site a few times with great results

Is there a storage facility near your Mums house?
The one near us will come and collect a Luton van load from a 15 mile radius to take to storage if you book for 12 weeks.
It might give to some breathing space to pick through everything at your own pace.

I second Shipley. We’ve moved all sorts.

Trainfromredhill · 06/06/2022 21:43

I’m going to second Shipley.com. Used it several times and always Ben impressed. You’ll need to do the packing though.

Discovereads · 06/06/2022 21:46

I use Sherpr they are similar to Shiply. Used them four times now and very happy. They pick up and deliver anywhere packed luggage or moving boxes. Alternatively you could lease a car for a day and move the boxes yourself.

Bloodyhelldog · 06/06/2022 21:47

I used Any Van to move a few boxes. They seem to get a slating but I also used them for removals, moving a car, storage and it's always been fine.

Dougt · 06/06/2022 21:51

You could try parcel2go, we used them to find the cheapest courier which I think ended up being Yodel.

We dropped packed boxes at a drop off point but some companies may collect. I’ve used Shiply for moving furniture, you get quotes from lots of “man and van” set ups, but found them quite pricey.

Cookingutensil · 06/06/2022 21:55

Can you give more of an idea where you are? You never know, maybe someone can help.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 06/06/2022 21:58

If you could manage the boxes you could hire a van. Many rentals do a one way service like hertz

BakeOffRewatch · 06/06/2022 22:19

Hi Op sorry to hear of your mum’s health. I find taskrabbit good for this, you put the job up and man and van can quote, ikea integrate it into their service. AnyVan.com is good too. Hope you find something that works.

I second this. I would gladly help a friend or family member with a task like this at a difficult time for them, when they don't drive.

You might be able to get them sent by parcel, but you pay per parcel and by weight, plus there's maximum size limits and you'd have to make sure anything delicate is packed to avoid being damaged.

Parcel2go lets you search by a range of common services, but you've mentioned being in what parcel companies often count as the Highlands, which adds £££s.

This is the sort of thing that AnyVan is very good for. I wouldn't trust them to pack boxes but they can absolutely move them from one place to another, cheaply and efficiently. Try them :)

Beingadiv · 07/06/2022 06:58

Anyvan or Shiply have been good in the past.
