Are coach holidays for old people only?

I'm tempted by destinations and attractions. Is it worth going?

I went on coach holidays around Europe on my own late teens/early 20s and again in my 30s. It was great, I could be on my own to explore and would be in a group during excursions for visiting places and at night had my own room to escape to.

There is no pressure to join in with everything. There is at least one character on the coach and it is a fun holiday to go on. I loved the vast difference in ages to chat to and I never had any negative experiences.

If I was single again I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I’m old (by your reckoning, no doubt, if not mine!) and I can’t imagine anything worse! Maybe I’ve watched too many episodes of ‘Coach Trip’ Shock

TroysMammy

Thank you, that’s a really helpful perspective. I quite like the sound of that!

Did a European one at 17, most of the other people were quite old but I loved it.

I did some great ones round Europe when I was in my 20s. Mixed aged groups. Lots of teachers.

This was Shearings, which sadly are no more. And some years ago now, but still….

My widowed DM had booked a Scottish Island cruise with a friend, who later said she couldn’t afford it, so they cancelled. DM was very disappointed.

Not long afterwards I was visiting a friend in hospital when I found a Shearings catalogue among waiting room mags. Browsing through it I found a tour of the Shetlands, that seemed v good value, so I suggested it to DM - offered to go with her - and we booked.

I joked beforehand about having to buy matching white cardis and flowery summer frocks, and having our hair done in matching curly perms.

I was early 40s at the time, DM early 70s, and I certainly wasn’t the youngest person on that coach. At least half were more middle aged than actually elderly. I have to say we found absolutely no fault - everything was brilliantly organised, no stress anywhere - we thoroughly enjoyed it. And the hotels were perfectly nice.

The one thing I did notice was that some of our fellow passengers never got out of the coach unless there was going to be something to eat and drink! - not even when we stopped at Sumburgh (sp?) Head, to see a mass of pink sea thrift - and the puffins! But maybe they had mobility issues. (As well as being on the heavy side.)

After that experience I would never mock coach holidays again!

No absolutely not! My mum took me and my sister on a Leger coach holiday when we were 13 and 16 and we had a blast! We went to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Paris, it was the first time my mum had been abroad since she was a small child and so it was a fab way to see a few sights in a few countries! I wouldn't take kids who have difficulty sitting for long periods of time though as obviously there is a LOT of travelling. From what I can recall there were people of all ages on the coach. Me and my sister were the youngest, but by no means was everyone else elderly!

long story short, last half term my dd 30, and my dgs 6 ended up on a week long coach holiday that my parents had booked but could not go on, it was a trip to wales to go on little trains, visit castles etc, they had a great time, my little chap so well behaved on the coach that an old lady gave him a fiver! Grin DD said all the old people were great fun and very friendly.
