Is your employer trialling the 4 day week?

I'm just curious about how it's going to work, will everyone want a Friday off? How is it working for part time staff?
Just a nosey post really.

Not working anywhere like this at the moment but my previous employer’s hours finished at 1pm on Friday’s and had done so since the early 2000’s, although the difference was that the hours were made up Mon to Thurs.

So, a bit different to what these employers are trialling but I can say that everyone absolutely loved finishing at 1pm! The company works with all major retailers and they adapted fine to no one being on the office half-day Friday’s and would no doubt adapt again if closed all day.

I’d absolutely love to have this again but I highly doubt the majority of employers would entertain this. Shame as work-life balance is so important but few employers care enough to try such a change in approach.

our manufacturing company works 8 till 5 mon to thurs and then 8.00 till 11.30 on a fri.

they’ve had an early finish for years and the previous company I worked at finished early on a Friday too.

its great, I love it,’can get so much done in the afternoons. Can’t see it working for shift workers etc though

Will they also be trialing paying their staff less? How will it work?

balalake · 06/06/2022 13:20

No, but some people work less than five days a week by choice.

My employer isn't trialling this but I am - I work 4.5 days over 4 and have Fridays off. I think the idea is that everyone will be so much more productive that they will get just as much done in 4 days as in 5. I have to say that this doesn't happen to me personally - I work a lot of evenings to get everything done! It's probably partially because I spend my day 'off' looking after a preschooler and a toddler so it's not exactly relaxation (though it is brilliant, and my favourite day of the week) so I'm not finding that I'm so much more rested that I work harder or whatever the theory is. In terms of pure productivity people should probably work more but shorter days, but I don't think that would be a particularly popular option.

It might work in certain sectors but not all I'm afraid

No, demand has gone through the roof for certain things and we don't have enough people with the right qualifications as it is.

My employer has flexibility.

I have just started working 5 days over 4. So 4 long days of 8.15 - 5.30 with a half hour lunch then Mondays off.

This is my first Monday and it feels odd!

jackstini · 06/06/2022 14:37

Been doing it for 10 years!
4 longer days and Fridays off. Used to be Wednesdays

Im on 4 days. Not my choice but that was the contract and job advertised.

my work aint trialling it (local government , imagine the uproar!) but if it was to become a thing they can either pay me full time wage to stay on 4 days or keep me on prorata on 3 days.

I work for a local gov and we have lots and lots of staff who work a 9 day fortnight. Seems to work very well for them
