Basically I'm 18f moving into a new house next week and will have a pay as you go card but idk what I'm supposed to do with my old one, do I use it for my new place too? Or do I have to call up and ask for a brand new card for my new place? And will they be able to send me it out in time?

I feel really dumb asking this so pls be kind) :

I don't know the answer to your question but just wanted to say don't feel stupid we all had to learn these things at one point :)

Pay as you go card for what exactly? Gas and electric? Mobile phone?

If its for power, most prepay can be done online now.

LIZS · 05/06/2022 23:16

Think it remains with property. So there should be one when you move in.

Disgruntledpelicanlady · 05/06/2022 23:18

The new house should have one left in the meter, but if not shops that do pay point can give you a new card when you top up (you'll just need to know which company runs the meter to make sure it's a compatible card)

A quick google doesn't tell me much (PAYG customers appear to be marginalised, what a surprise) but British Gas was firmly of the opinion that you need to tell your supplier you're moving.

If you have the time to hang around waiting on the phone it's probably worth calling them to ask.

JuneJubilee · 05/06/2022 23:27

Don't feel daft, I wouldn't have a clue either! I've always just had an account & when I've topped up other peoples I've just done what they normally do.

have you looked on your suppliers website?

if you can't find it online, make yourself a nice drink & a snack & settle down to wait on the phone!

hopefully it won't be too much hassle!! Hope your new place is nice!!

However you pay you should contact the supplier in case there is a debt on the Metre left by the previous owner. I would think you would need a new card soon even if you use the old card until then - but make sure they confirm that there is no previous debt on there.

Best to let your current provider's know you are moving.

Give them your new address and date your moving in.

Take a photo of your current meters.

Get new cards for your new home asap, otherwise any electricity or gas credit you buy (with the card that's left behind ) may be credited to the previous tenants bill.

Enjoy your new home.

HappyNannie is correct with this, you will also get any credit due back from your current address

You need to get your own card/keys for gas and electric. Or have it changed into your name from move in date. I moved into a house, not knowing anything about this and the Landlord told me in no circumstances to lose the card or key as it would cost me to have it replaced.

That was a lie. A few weeks later I realized the money was going down much faster that our usage. Turned out the landlord was paying off debt on the card, so every time we topped up a percentage was taken to pay that back.

it took a while to get it sorted, and I did eventually get a refund. You can be damned sure I called the companies back when we moved out to let them know the landlord was moving back in and they could start getting the debt repaid again.
