What muscle, joint or bone is this?

Lying flat on back, legs straight, hip width apart and relaxed. Tilt your pelvis forward in to the floor. Pain is felt in the lower central back and in the buttock of one side. What area would this be?

Lying flat on back, legs straight, hip width apart and relaxed. Tilt one side of pelvis up toward the shoulder and the opposite leg down (so it’s slightly longer than the other leg). Pain is felt in the same buttock but deep in the area.

The pain is like a strong cramping feeling but eases off when either movement is stopped. Residual pain is felt along the lower back. Pain is also mainly felt when lying or sitting.

Can anyone help me pinpoint where this is?

Could be sciatic pain?

orwellwasright · 05/06/2022 21:04

I think that's your bum bone.

Pirriformis?

SpurOfTheMoments · 05/06/2022 21:18

@QuestionableMouse I’ve been told sciatic pain also spreads down the legs in to the foot and is a sharp pain.

I am unsure if it’s sacroiliac joint or piriformis. Is there a way to tell the difference? The pain is miserable and I’m planning to visit the GP but I need to pinpoint where it is.

Piriformis syndrome www.healthline.com/health/piriformis-syndrome

OhRiRi · 05/06/2022 21:23

It's in your lower back and buttock area. The gp will either examine you or refer you to physio. You don't need to identify it precisely.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/06/2022 21:23

you just tell your GP where you think it is
he/she can tell you what it is

how long have you had it?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/06/2022 21:24

gluteous?

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/06/2022 21:24

referred from your hip?

who knows

MrsLargeEmbodied · 05/06/2022 21:25

trochanteric?

Undecicive · 05/06/2022 21:28

Piriformis or gluteus medius. One session of a decent sport massage sorted mine.

SpurOfTheMoments · 05/06/2022 21:28

I’ve had it with progressive severity for almost 6 months.

oh dear,
best get it checked out op

It could be sciatic pain referred from the lumbar spine. Sciatic pain does not always travel down the leg to the foot, it depends where the sciatic nerve is irritated. It could also be pain from the piriformis. A good physio should be able to help. Exercise should also help.

vipersnest1 · 05/06/2022 21:36

Try a piriformis stretch to see if that is the problem:

If it is, you know what it is and also how to treat it. If not, it's something else, like pure sciatica. Either way, you can refer yourself to your local NHS physio, or go private. My piriformis syndrome last Easter was so bad I couldn't walk. In a way, I almost hope for you that that's what it is, as it's a relatively easy fix. Flowers

Osteopath.

doadeer · 05/06/2022 21:42

I would say it could be SI joint or pirriformas it's a funny hidden muscle behind gluteous.

Try the stretch someone put above.

When I've had si joint injury, a seated forward fold was immensely painful

Piriformis or gluteus medius. One session of a decent sport massage sorted mine.

This is likely correct (I’m a qualified sports massage therapist). I would suggest a session with an osteopath to sort the joint and massage for the piriformis spasm.

Just fyi (for anyone) sciatic pain doesn't have to go down the leg, it can just be very localised in the buttock. Or buttocks - thanks dd2!

uncomfortablydumb53 · 05/06/2022 22:32

Sacro illiac Joint pain

MissMaple82 · 05/06/2022 23:43

A physio told me sciatica only travels down the leg, if it doesn't travel down some or all of yhe leg it's not sciatica
