Suggestions - Next Door Starting Major Building Work - Just in Time for GCSEs

So, next door neighbours moved in last year, young couple who have done quite a bit if building work. We live in a terraced typical 2 up, 2 down type.

We have asked them numerous times to at least let us know when they will be doing building work as husband on nights and DD1 doing GCSEs.

Oh, and they both work in education.

Anyway, they text us yesterday that they are starting an extension on Monday, just in time for GCSEs. Shock

Of course they are entitled to do work on their own house and don't need permission, but am wondering about any tried and tested blocks out all noise headphones?

These silicon ear plugs and then ear defenders.

My older two used to go to the library or into school to study sometimes. They found it gave them better focus than being at home. Is that an option if it is too noisy and distracting at home?

Ear defenders

To be fair to your neighbours, they may not have had much say in the timeframe as I think it can be difficult to get builders at the moment.

It's a good idea - may take the day off tomorrow and after her morning exam and find a local library where she is comfortable.

My neighbours built an extension in the part of lockdown just when DC was doing home schooling GCSEs with lots of online exams to use for the teacher assessed grades. I totally feel your pain.

My neighbours also worked in education and were very sympathetic. They had a copy of DC's exam schedule and their builders stopped work around it. For revision you just have to suck it up though really. DC played music as much/loud as they wanted. Don't let your DC think it's anything negative. They will take their lead from you. Good luck.

Can’t she go in to school? We provide a revision room for students who need it.

Please don't let on that you're flapping about this. That won't help your daughter's nerves nor teach her to be resilient.

Also why do you need to take a day off work? Can't a 15 year old find the local library? You sound a fusspot. Let her be!

They will likely have had absolutely no choice in when the building work started and very little notice themselves. Our work started earlier than expected as the builder had a cancellation. We literally got a text the day before saying it was starting.

Good point. And when I calm down, I will try to agree a schedule, or something reasonable, so maybe they can stop at 17:00?

I work nights. I live near a busy road and a skateboard park! I use Beary Quiet earplugs which can be bought from Amazon.

My DD stays late in the school library or goes to a local library (fortunately only a ten minute walk away). She also goes to our local park on sunny days. She uses nouse cancelling headphones through which she listens to music, which really helps her.

Thanks - am not a fusspot, and am not flapping.

Oh, didn't realise that it was possible to have noise cancelling earphones and music!!!!! Thank you.

Very few builders will work past 5pm. Ours usually stopped around 4.30pm after having cleared up.
