Will DD likely be penalised for this

DD(15) sat a GCSE exam yesterday, which she prepared so well and worked hard for.

She is aware of all the exam hall rules including that you can’t bring mobile phones in with you.

Yesterday, she had her phone with her but forgot to leave it at the school reception until after the exam was finished.

She was not using her mobile phone during the exam nor did she attempt to. The phone was also switched off.

It was in her pocket and it fell out onto the floor and invigilator seen it happen.

Her head of year rang me yesterday to inform
that they are obliged to report it to the exam board and that they could very well take marks off her or disqualify her.

I feel sorry for DD as she worked so hard for these exams and she has been quite distressed over it all and the possibility of being penalised. It just slipped her mind but she knows to be more aware for future exams.

I get that exam boards have to follow procedures, but surely the fact she wasn't actually using the phone will work in her favour?

It sounds very different in Wales - why are they still using A- E and not 1-9?

Education is devolved in Wales, so I guess it's a different group of people (Welsh Govt has a very different political mix from Westminster) deciding what they think is best for a different population. Wales is the poorest nation in the UK and no doubt has particular needs associated with that. (This might be a more likely explanation explanation for its lower PISA scores, as household wealth has a positive association with educational attainment.)

Big changes ahead tho, thankfully mine will just be finished before they come in, as the changes will be radical.

Right. Sorry to derail the thread, but I can see there are mixed feelings about the Welsh system.

My son had basically this happen the other day (Tuesday). His switched off phone was found hanging out of the pocket of his blazer that was on the back of his chair. He literally just forgot and has 4 diagnosed conditions that affect organisation, working memory, and executive function in general. He was in a room with 12 students total, at least 3 invigilators and he has ASD, ADHD, developmental coordination disorder (Dyspraxia) and dyslexia. He also has a prompter who sits close by. He's now in a flap for the rest of his exams because he has jumped to worst case scenario of having all his exams voided. Any advice?
