My mum took me as a child, we watched from tower bridge. She is convinced it wasn’t New Years/Guy Faulks but a “special event”. Please help!

Oh don’t be ridiculous

Westnorwood · 04/06/2022 21:17

Lord Mayor’s show?

MILdesperandum · 04/06/2022 21:18

Maybe, do they normally have fireworks?

Royal Wedding maybe?

Jean Michelle Jarre concert

MILdesperandum · 04/06/2022 21:22

I think that’s more likely, my Nan was more of a royals fan and it was her idea to go. It felt like a big event not something that would happen every year like the lord mayors’

I think that’s less likely. 😆

Wonder if it was 1986, Ken Livingstone ordered a huge fireworks display to mark final days of Labour controlled Greater London Council, closed by Maggie Thatcher. Rumour was the last of the GLC budget went on fireworks, it certainly lit up central London!

MILdesperandum · 04/06/2022 21:26

Great story! I think that would be too early though, I would only have been 2…

My parents went to a big Son et Lumiere in London in around 1992/3. I remember because I stayed home and went out with my boyfriend instead. I overestimated how late back they would be and they got home before me and I was in so much trouble. But I have no idea what the occasions was. Unless it was 40 year jubilee?

There were lots of big gigs at Docklands in the late 89s/early 90s that had fireworks, as was the fashion then. Pink Floyd, Jean Michelle Jarre. I think Bowie.

MILdesperandum · 04/06/2022 21:55

I did wonder if it could have been a jubilee but can’t find that there were fireworks for it. Thanks though

Ooo, I just spoke to my Mum and she thinks it was something to do with the Meridian.

Another one for Jean Michel Jarre's "Destination Docklands" concert. The live crowd was 250,000 over two nights and you could watch it from the waterside and several parks. His music fits a wide spectrum. October 1988.
