Boring laundry thread

I feel that for a two person household, (DS17 and I) there is continual washing.

Just wondering how many washings people do a week? Including everything.

Including towels and bedding, I must do about 8/9 and still DS' basket overflows. Although he wears clothes for work during the day and then changes at night. I do too, I guess, but feel that pyjamas straight after work don't count Grin

I know I'm in a terrible habit of wearing full clean outfit every day, with the exception of maybe wearing jeans twice.

But sometimes I think I maybe wash more as I don't actually have enough clothes? Certainly not an issue for DS.

Also, as an aside, what laundry products do people use? I use Persil and Lenor, but trying to find something cheaper, but decent!

5 of us (dc are teens) and I do one wash a day.

tealandteal · 03/06/2022 18:36

2 adults and a 4 year old here, do a wash every other day. I use Persil non bio but Fairy for small baby clothes. Expecting DC2 any day now so expect to do a lot more!

washingwakeup · 03/06/2022 18:49

I don't know where I'm going wrong then. I don't do a wash every day, but on the days I do, it's sometimes 2 or 3.

Are you washing towels and bedding every week?

Me, DH and 2 teens

Bedding once a week as we have a cat who sleeps on beds so 3 loads, towels 2 loads a week, whites 1 load and colours probably 2 or 3. It's never ending but I don't mind ironing as I catch up with tv!

ItsDinah · 03/06/2022 19:02

There's a huge variation in the load sizes of washing machines. Some take twice as much or even more as others. Which, the Consumer Association, test laundry detergent. They give scores. The lowest score I've seen is 19 % and the highest around 85%. The last reports show that Aldi Liquid and powder are up at the top. For years their tests show Aldi or Lidl coming in at or near the top. They don't often test fabric conditioners but the last test I saw showed that the expensive brands did work better. You could always try a cheapie and see what you think.

Rainbowshine · 03/06/2022 19:03

How many items are you putting in each wash? I separate underwear from main items as it works better for me, the underwear wash is weekly and then I have one or two washes for main items weekly. That would include trousers, tops and jeans. Occasionally I have to do a delicates wash for jumpers. Then towels once a week and bed sheets once a week.

CharlotteSt · 03/06/2022 19:06

So, apart from jeans, are you washing everything after one wear? If so, that's where you're going wrong.

Jenjenn · 03/06/2022 19:17

I do 2-3 loads a week in winter, 3-4 loads in summer as its easier to dry laundry in summer. I do bedding weekly in summer and every 2 weeks in winter. 2 adults 1 dc, no mad amounts of sports clothing or work uniform. I use the purple aldi powder and white comfort conditioner.

MayBeee · 03/06/2022 19:25

I live in a soft water area , so I have an empty fabric conditioner bottle and when I get a new bottle I pour half into empty bottle and fill both with water and then use.
Use Fairy washing powder , again use half as much as suggested. As a family we get skin problems , a dermatologist told me to do this and as a soft water area we get away with it.

MarmiteOnToast · 03/06/2022 19:26

2 to 3 a day.
2 adults 1 teen 1 pre teen. 2 under 5.
All 5 beds once a week. Towels every other day.
Dh uniform has to be done seperately

Aldi non bio.
Any fabric conditioner from tesco own, aldi own, to branded depending on offerw I buy different fragrance eachtime as i like it varied.

AmberEars · 03/06/2022 19:29

We do less washing than you OP and there are 5 of us (me and DH and three teens).

There's no need to have a completely fresh outfit every day. I wear jeans for a week and tops twice (unless they seem smelly - I give the armpits a quick sniff!). Pyjamas, towels and bedding are washed once a week.

Washing a bit less will save you time and money (with rising energy bills) as well as being better for the environment.

RandomMess · 03/06/2022 19:32

It helps if people state what capacity their machine is. Ours in 10kg I think and probably do 7-10 loads per week for 5 adults that do a lot of sport between them.

BertieBotts · 03/06/2022 19:33

We wash most of our stuff after one wear, the tiny kids can't eat cleanly, DH and DS1 and I get sweaty although we do wear trousers and jumpers more than once, but there are five of us and I'm washing about as much as you OP. Don't have a giant machine (6kg). We are probably a bit lax on the towels and bedding. Maybe you're washing too much? Jeans are designed to be worn for ages without being washed, not just twice. Bedding doesn't need to be changed more often than once a week.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 03/06/2022 19:37

I would get him to take charge of his own washing and then you will only have half the washing to worry about. His future partner will thank you for it!

Furrbabymama87 · 03/06/2022 19:38

I do about 2 washes a day, maybe 3 if I'm doing bedding and towels. There's 6 of us though.

ChanceNorman · 03/06/2022 19:41

I easily do 20 loads a week.

3 dc and a DH who all regularly go to the gym or play muddy sports and one dc who regularly bed wets.

Jules912 · 03/06/2022 19:54

About 10 loads a week, 2 adults, 2 children, one of whom is young enough to get grubby and need clean clothes at least once a day.

Wickywickyyow · 03/06/2022 20:08

We all have one towel each and it gets washed with the coordinating person's bedding so no need for separate load for towels.

washingwakeup · 03/06/2022 20:11

Thanks all.

My machine is 8kg.

I wash less now that I don't have a school uniform and football kits to wash, at least. The fact that I no longer have to iron school uniform is AMAZING in itself Grin

I've just picked up some Aldi washing capsules, so I'll give them a go. I'm also a soft water area, so might give the fabric conditioner tip a go too.

I will need to try and get in the habit of at least hanging up my work clothes and getting another wear out of them. Same with pyjamas, as I take the bottoms off to go to bed, so could easily get a few wears out of them.

I have specific days for each persons laundry, then a day for hand towels, a bedding day, a day for whites. I do always end up doing more than one wash a day though as I also have smelly dog bedding that needs done more than once a week (yes we bathe him he just stinks!) along with various other things that crop up such ad DD coming home with her jacket all muddy, I will wash their trainers when they get mucky etc.

I like Smol but its getting expensive so I'm switching. Asdas non bio pods have been good on my DS's eczema so far and I'm liking Surf Coconut pods with Method coconut softener. Smells very summery!

DelurkingAJ · 03/06/2022 20:24

I reckon on about six washes a week for four of us (10kg machine). That includes sportswear for DH and DSs. I alternate towels and bed linen so they’re washed fortnightly. I use Tescos bio wash and gave up fabric softener a couple of years ago (and nobody noticed). We’re in a hard water area.
